Ok, first of all ds rarely gets sick - and it's been some time since he's even had sniffles. I feel like a new mom now that he's been really sick - I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right!! So I'd appreciate your thoughts!

A week and a half ago ds (who's now 4.5yo) came down with a low-grade fever. He also had a loose cough. The fever lasted 3 days and was gone - until a few days later. Then when his nose started running, it came back - with his first earache. He's had the earache from last Wed night (now four days) and he goes from feeling fine to being very uncomfortable and whiney and crying - which causes me to give him children's motrin (no dye) since he's sooooo uncomfortable. I'm not a medication person (supplements yes) so it's bothering me that since this all started we've basically poured an entire bottle of the stuff down him. He's had more this last week and a half than he's had his whole 4.5 years!

I've also been giving him vitamins, greens, zinc, cod liver oil, garlic drops and other natural ear drops, vit c, and homeopathic when I remember. I'm getting so frustrated!! He always seemed to have such a fantastic immune system - what's going on?! I know antibiotics are not really the way to go - am I being a bad mom for not taking him to the dr? What else can I do?? Oh - plus I have him sleep with his ear on a nice hot water bottle that I made a soft fleece cover for...... but it's not working!!!

What would you do?

I know how you feel.We rarely get sick here.

If you still nursing him, you can put a few drops of breast milk on the ear. Also, you can smash a garlic clove with olive oil and leave rest for a couple hours, then you warm out a little of olive oil to mix with rest of the olive oil w/garlic. Use a couple drop for put in you son ears, when sleep. Smell is yucky, but it works.

Also, you can supplement with elderberry syrup and zinc...
I hope you LO feel better today.

I wish I had breast milk, but we stopped when he was 2.5yo. I have been putting garlic oil in his ears though. Every day I hope he's improved and then it seems to start again.
:

He woke up about 2am really needing more motrin, but that's the last dose he's gotten - so we've gone about 10 hours so far. He does still have a 100 deg fever though. And says his ear still hurts. But at least he's not feeling so bad that he's whining/crying.

I just want it to stop already! I suppose it doesn't help that I had JUST bragged to a friend about how ds never gets sick....
