Ok, where do I start? I have one child. This is my second pregnancy. Well my first day of my last period was halloween (oct 31) my periods are very normal 4/5 days... 28/29 day cycle. With the calculations I was/am 5 weeks pregnant. Very early. I had taken 2 home test on the 1st and 2nd of dec and then to the doc on the second to get an 'offical' test done and was verified friday the 3rd that I was pregnant. I was experancing very sore/tender breast since then. I had also had a very bad sore throat. They thought it could of been strep but got tested and it came back negative. Doctor said I could only take tyenonl for the pain and drink warm salty water. No theraflu or anything. So for three days I was basically in bed. By Tuesday dec 7th I was feeling better. My throat was itchy but no soreness. Wednesday the 8th I had gone to the bathroom later in the afternoon with a small amount of brown (old blood) discharge but it was so small that I had to triple look at it. That was it for any blood for Wednesday. Thursday later in the day I had went to the bathroom again and again there was a little discharge but it was a bit lighter in color, more towards blood. My husband and I did have sex that morning, so I thought maybe that had cause myself to have a little blood. By thursday night I was feeling pretty crampy, thinking maybe I had some bad food. I laid in bed rested and watched some tv and then Friday morning when I woke up and went potty, my underware was covered in bright red/dark blood. I called the doc and they told me to go to the ER. I had taken a home pregnancy test before I left and it still said positive. I went in the ER and they took blood and a pee test. They did a pelivc exam and the doc said that my bleeding was slowing down or had stopped at that time and point. Within ten mins she came back in with my test results saying my HCG level was at a 38 and should be up in the 7,000 range. She said it being that low that its not going to last. So with that all said... She told me that I could expect a lot more cramping and blood but she also said that there is a VERY small chance that the fetus/baby could still live and I could still carry this on. But the chances of that happening are very small. So at this point in time I guess I was still pregnant and hadn't lost it yet. She ordered me to come back on Monday to see my Primary doc and get retested. I dont know what to expect. Should I expect to discharge something? Am I still pregnant? I can only do so much research to the point of breaking down in tears. Any input or suggestions, notes, thoughts would be nice. As I type I'm starting to get small sharp pain on my left side in my pelvic... Thanks for reading.

I have had an early miscarriage at the same timeframe (5 weeks ish) and it resembled a period, perhaps a little on the heavy side, but at that point, there's nothing big enough to pass that would be super noticeable in comparison to later miscarriages where the placenta has grown and the fetus is visible to the naked eye. However, everyone's experiences are different--some women do have more cramping and clotting, even with an early miscarriage. There is always a chance that bleeding in early pregnancy has other causes, besides miscarriage, so getting your HCG levels tested or having an ultrasound are often used to determine whether the pregnancy is progressing after a bleeding spell. f your HCG levels are still going up after bleeding, that is a good sign that the pregnancy did not end. I did end up getting a transvaginal ultrasound after my second miscarriage because I wanted to make sure that it wasn't a fluke and I wanted to ensure that my uterus was free from anything that could cause infection. The ultrasound did confirm the miscarriage but it was helpful for my peace of mind to know the final outcome. Waiting is the hardest part, seriously. Be gentle on yourself!

there's a good thread in the main pregnancy and birth loss forum where women talk about their miscarriage experiences in detail (this is actually the "pregnancy after loss" forum).

personally, both of my early losses were very much like periods, from a strictly physical standpoint. no real cramping, blood (a big gush at first, later an on and off flow) and only a bit of tissue visible with one of them (4.5 weeks) and only bleeding with the second (5 weeks). lasted 4-6 or so days.

we can't really tell you if you are pregnant or not. but we can offer virtual hugs and i urge you to take good care of yourself, no matter what.
