Does anybody give their dog fish oil? I am trying to give it to my pack, but they are having none of it. They eat other pills mixed with their (dry) food fine, but the fish oil is being left in the bowls. Does it taste nasty or something?

You might want to make a big deal of it, like it was a treat, and give some to one dog then the others want it too and they chow it down!<br><br>
You can try pricking one end with a tac and then giving it to them and then when they chew they will taste the oil and be encouraged to chew it up.<br><br>
Personally I don't give them with meals because they are too excited about their food and they leave them or if I try to give them before they are allowed to eat they just spit them back out because they know real food is on the way! I do use them as treats and it works wonderfully. It might also help that they see me take them (they run when they hear the bottle being opening - they know that sound) and so the leader is eating them and at times I share with them kind of thing.<br><br>
Funny story: My sister was letting her 20 month old give them to the dog and she stepped into the garage to toss something and came back and the baby was chewing on something - an O-3 capsule! Now, he LOVES them and he and the dog are constantly sharing them!!

I never give mine fish oil but I have given them fish. I haven't come across a dog yet that doesn't like mackerel.<br><br>
Its better to give it to them in natural form if you can.

I never give mine fish oil but I have given them fish. I haven't come across a dog yet that doesn't like mackerel.<br><br>
Its better to give it to them in natural form if you can.
I agree that it's better from a natural source but there is no way that I could give enough wild mackeral to balance out the over abundance of O-6 in factory farmed meat. Farmed mackeral is just not going to do it.<br><br>
Unfortunately, I don't have access to affordable pasture fed, grain free meat - the least expensive I have found so far is $7.80/lb and with a dog that eats about 40/lbs a month that's not feasible for me.<br><br>
If anyone in southern California has any tips on where you find pasture fed goat, lamb, buffalo, etc... I would love some info!

Do you feed tripe? In my internet travels I remember there was a place that sold green tripe that was a little south of San Jose. At the time I looked the price was less than a dollar a pound and it was all from grass fed beef.

I do feed green tripe. I think that the green tripe you are talking about is <a href="http://www.greentripe.com" target="_blank">www.greentripe.com</a> and that's what I feed.<br><br>
I feed 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ so the green tripe at most is only making up 10% of the diet and that's just not nearly enough to combat the overload of O-6. The ratio should be 1:1 (O-3 to O-6), with factory farmed meat it's anywhere between 1:30 and 1:50!

Well, I feel dry and am not going to switch at this time to raw (though I'd like to at some point when it becomes more feasible), so the fish oil capsules are going to have to do it.<br><br>
I wonder if they'd prefer liquid fish oil on their food, though?
