We are looking for an individual family health insurance plan (not a group plan through an employer) that is not through my husband's work. What kind do you have? What is your policy like (cost, copays, deductibles, our of pockets, etc)? Any recommendations?

I know some people may say not to spend the money on insurance, but our employer is paying for it even though it is not a group plan.

I don't have it, but I've heard that high deductible plans from Blue Cross are really good for those who don't want to pay much out of pocket but want to be covered in case of emergency. I'm guessing their lower deductible plans would be good, too.

We researched an individual plan through BCBS and decided not to get it because the maternity coverage is virtually non-existant. You can get it added for about $100 a month, but even at that, they only pay out $1500 to the OB and $1500 to the hospital. It seemed like throwing money away. But, if you're just doing it for regular medical coverage and don't plan on ever using it for maternity, then I guess it wasn't too bad. Especially if the employer is paying for it. The catastrophic insurance (hospital admittance coverage only) is something my parents have because they've ended up in a catastophic situation before. But, I wouldn't bother with just that if you can get the employer to pay for full coverage.

We have a plan through Beech Street PPO via this website. We pay $271 per month, they don't look at preexisting conditions (ds was born w/ multiple health issues), $25 copay, Vision/dental included but not great and other "perks" such as discounts at different theme parks, Hertz membership, Life Insurance. It's a group plan through some business organization. It's great for someone who has preexisting and needs a decent plan.

This is who we have our policy with http://www.assuranthealth.com/corp/ah/

it's a PPO and our deduct. is $5100 (which we already met b/c I had some unexpected health problems) so they are paying 100%(as long as its in network) for the rest of the year.. we DONT have maternity

for My dh, dd and I its $314 a month which I think is high and when this year is up I am going to look for something better, we dont have a co-pay.....but you get a really good prescribtion discount (on most meds)

eta: we also have a health saving act but dont use anymore

So far, so good. I did want to mention that the BeechStreet policy covers $10K hospitalizations, then after that the insured pays 20% over that initial 10K. FYI. The great thing is that most docs take PPO, so all of the specialists I was looking at through All Childrens accept it. Yay!

If you want to see if your PCP's and specialists accept it, you can do the doc find right here.

I'm curious on this too - we just moved here, and DH's new employer's "great coverage" turns out to be great for HIM, but an addition $800 per month for DS and I, and it is only an HMO.

time to consider private insurance. But it needs to cover maternity (MW specifically - how does that work down here since it seems like you have to HB to have a MW?) and emergency stuff (DS has severe anaphylaxis allergies).

We have Golden Rule (DS and I, DH has crappy coverage through work) with maternity coverage and it's $295/month. Our health plan is basically preventative care, any WBV and my annual appointment are totally covered, but if you have a sick appointment, you have to pay the network price. It's a good plan if you don't get sick often.

The maternity is an optional rider we had added on. They have different benefit options, and we chose the $4,000 benefit which made it $100 more a month (thus the $295 figure). But the first year you have the rider, they will only pay 50% of the benefit, so $2,000. After the first year, they'll pay the entire $4,000. This is by far the best individual maternity policy I've found, and I did a lot of research.
