I have really been trying to like fleece covers and AIOS. They are so soft and seem like they would be so comfy and cozy. But everytime I have put DS in a fleece outer it has leaked. And I don't leave him in long - just one little pee and the cover is all wet and soaking through. Is this just the way fleece works - and if so, why do people like it on the outside of diapers?

I've had great success with 2 layers of 200 wt MM fleece for covers, and much less success with other combos like windpro or windbloc outer with micro or 100 wt inner. I like windpro and windbloc, but I still always needed a heavier wt with them like 200wt or 300 wt, and I always needed two layers for covers. I made one pocket fleece cover too and that didn't work well for us either. Fleece will have compression wetting just like wool will, so you need to have good absorbent layers underneath. If you buy some of the cheaper fleeces like some of the walmart or joanne's fleece and other fleeces out there, many are not suitable for outer, but are just fine for the inner layers when you want them to wick wetness into the absorbent layers of your diaper. You can treat fleece with nikwax to get it waterproof, btw. I know the one stop diaper shop mama sells it and it is easy to find online.

Hey Meghan, I believe they are, and then one of them is heavier than the other, but I always goof which is which. I'm not very well versed on the fleece, There are some fleece geeks on here, though. I remember one thread when this one mama schooled us and layed out how they were all made and which ones were heavier than others and all that good stuff. I doubt I'd ever be able to find it, but it was informative!

Maybe you're having compression wicking? I won't use fleece under snug clothing or on a car trip but otherwise it works great. But if DS is in snug pjs or sitting for any length of time -forget it!

The only fleece covers I have are Polar Babies, and they have never, ever leaked for us. They have a waterproof liner sewn into them though...apparently not all fleece covers have this? The way Polar Babies does is it is to sew the waterproof liner in at both ends of the cover, but not at the sides. Therefore, it is quite breathable and waterproof at the same time.

Well, I'm not sure what you are using but I have two one layer Polartec fleece (300wt Malden Mills) covers from www.sweetcheeksdiapers.com and they are wonderful at holding in leaks. My son (a 21 month old super soaker) can wear a fitted under it with a prefold and fleece liner and the cover is dry after 12 hours!!! The fitted and inserts are all absolutely soaked, so I know the cover is working beautifully. Really, I think the keys to using fleece are to make sure the underneath diaper is good quality and the needed absorbency and that the fleece is very good quality.
