I recently discovered 100% polyester 'Fleece' Binding at JoAnns and bought two packets in white. I've not used it yet, but it seems like a nice way to bind the edges of a wrap and it hopefully won't wick.

Anyone used it yet and put it through the use/wash/use test yet? Did it wick or pill up?

I've used something like that I bought at walmart and it seems to work just fine. It's a little more difficult to use than FOE. It's hard to take around the corners.

It doesn't seem to pill, but it does catch everything else from other diapers. I just used red binding on a diaper and the first time I washed it, it had white lint all over it. But it doesn't pill that I can tell.

It's a lot softer than FOE I think.

I've only used it on an aio I made from a bummis wrap I took apart (it had just about had it as a cover) and it's never wicked. The one I made yesterday was with a cotton print outer but I haven't had a chance to see how well it keeps moisture away from the cotton yet.

Thanks for the info! I was thinking about making a generic pul wrap but with the softer fleece for the legs/back, so it'd be lightweight yet soft on any areas that might touch the baby.

I still like the all polar fleece wrap, and then move onto wool (with fleece trim) when I feel more confident in cutting it and making the leg opening 'even'.

Thanks again! I didn't want to bother with it, if someone had used it and said it sucks for that purpose

I have used it on wool wraps made from recycled sweaters. It seemed to work just fine. I'm not the best at sewing any binding, so I did have difficulty "cornering", but I totally blame it on my sewing skills. :) I used light grey on a dark grey sweater and haven't noticed much pilling. I also hand wash it (as I do all my wool), so it doesn't have a chance to mingle with other clothes and pick up lint.

OH that sounds like a georgeous combination! I bought a dark gray, lambswool sweater at Goodwill for 1.50 and wanted to use that with maybe pink or purple fleece binding for my new baby, which I just found out is a GIRL!!!! Doing happy dance!! Still playing with cheaper polar fleece until I find a cover pattern I truely love, before cutting into that wool!

I love my two boys, but I have wanted a girl so bad! Now I can make cute dresses and diaper covers out of some of the lux fabric I've been saving for YEARS, jic.

I do make the boys cute stuff, but I REALLY want to go frilly girlie.

It's not you...its not a knit or bias binding, so its not going to wrap nicely on curves or corners. I also don't see how it would work in that it doesn't stretch. I bought some of this but never ended up using it since FOE that you buy online works so much better. There are often co-ops for FOE.

I didn't want to use it like FOE, just to cover the raw edges, after an elastic was already applied, for a 'neat' appearance and soft edges for baby's legs/back.

But Yes, I see where it would be difficult for corners, after having played with it this afternoon! The New Conceptions covers have a 'straight' edge for the sides where you fold and stitch down, so it might work for that better than the 'rounded' style I played with today.

I cut a 1" strip of microfleece and tried applying that, over the entire outer edge, after having used elastic. It's working nice, but cutting 1" of a LONG enough piece to give me a continous strip was no fun!

I'll post a pic if I can figure out where to put my pictures online for free! It's a buff colored 300 wt MM fleece cover with purple microfleece bound edge. If I get my new colored snaps tomorrow, I'll finish it and take a pic.

I've used this but found it to be too thick as is (ie double fold). I used it on a PUL cover made from the New Conceptions pattern. On fleece or wool, though, it might not be too thick. What I ended up doing, that I did like, was cutting it in half (vertically, on the fold line). Then it was just one layer but since the fabric doesn't fray, I just left the edges raw when I sewed it on. It turned out nice, I think. I had been binding with 1" wide strips of PUL cut from the left over fabric (but I ran out before I got all the covers finished and had this stuff in a drawer) which again I sewed on leaving raw edges. And just one layer, the fleece really wasn't that much thicker than the PUL.

I used elastic in a casing on the legs, front, and back - just regular polybraid. I only used the binding around the wings where there wasn't a casing. I didn't want to turn the "wings" because I had sandwiched some ripstop nylon between two layers of wool there to support the snaps.

I've used the fleece binding *as* a casing around the legs of a pull up cover and it worked great. It was a one layer Windpro fleece cover, I just cut it out, bound it with the fleece using a straight stitch, and threaded the elastic in. Very fast and cute.

I like it a lot, it's nice and soft and I can't imagine it wicking (haven't used it yet, though).

Ohhh, I like that idea! /bonks self

I was thinking about al lthe different ways to bind covers last night in bed (got about 3 hours sleep because I couldn't shut of my 'sewing brain'....

And now why didn't I think of just putting it on and THEN feeding it to the spots where it needs to go!

Thanks for the great idea!
