we have our 2 month check ups in a few days for the twins. cassius is still very floppy - no neck control really at all (if you hold him upright he rests his ear on his shoulder. if you pull him to sitting from laying his head falls all the way back). is this still ok in a 2 month old? none of our other 3 kids were this floppy at birth even, so i am clueless about what is/isn't in the range of normal - it's so different from our experience. just trying to find out what i can before our appt so i'm not suprised or miss mentioning something...

Well, they were both 36 weekers, right? So he's really closer to one month old, and he was kinda low birth weight (not for gestational age, but compared to 40 weekers) so I'm guessing most of his energy went to straight growing those first few weeks. Also, was he by chance your twin B? Twin B had some issues right after Twin A was born, didn't he? Dr had to reach in ad retrieve him kind of? Just those few minutes of stress could have set him back a bit.

Otherwise...I don't really know when the drs would worry...both of my kids were stronger by this age, but then again, Ian was keeping his head level with his shoulders when pulled at only 2 weeks old, so I don't have a "normal" frame of reference!

Definitely mention it to the dr, but for now they'll probably just note it and remind you to give him lots of tummy time.

Well, I can tell you that our pediatrician got concerned about Andrew's head control at that time. But maybe she was seeing other stuff with him...not sure. It wasn't until he was late to roll (at 6 months) that we got referred for physical therapy. But she seemed concerned well before that and I knew he was floppy compared to Caleb. Hypotonic babies are floppy when you carry them and those with normal muscle tone aren't. It's different from the start/birth even. It's hard to describe what that feels like though...it's like they aren't helping you at all. My boys were 37 weekers and Caleb was the distressed one at birth. Andrew was significantly bigger and had good apgar scores. But it was Andrew with the delayed gross motor. But I think the first really set in stone significant milestone is rolling over by 6 months.

yeah, he has been floppier since birth. we call him puddle. he is just a puddle. very sweet and snuggly though.

they were 36wks 6 days. he was baby A. it's not just neck control either. it's kinda ridiculous trying to get him into position to nurse cause he is so floppy. he slumps over in his carseat and bouncy seat way bad. of course i'm trying not to compare him to fox - cause he was holding his head up at birth. the nurses kept commenting on how well he was using his neck. i can't remember at all how jet was at this time since we switched dr's several times in his first couple years i know stuff like this could have been missed. marvel had hypertonia from birth so she was way to the other extreme.
wait and see of course. i'm gonna make myself crazy scrutinizing every little thing. i'm trying really hard NOT to do that. dr google helps, right? haha

wow, well i couldn't remember how floppy jet was at 2 months so i went looking through pics. this is him at 3 days shy of 2 months - http://www.flickr.com/photos/andreas...7600525784393/ so yeah...very good tone.

someone mentioned that with multiples the baby on the bottom can have low tone. i'm totally curious about that. seems like if that is the case it would just be a slow start kinda thing and he'll get over it in time.

My bottom baby was my high tone and the top my low tone. I did have a PT (at 6 months) tell me that he sees lots of twins with one with highish and the other lowish tone though. Caleb's high-ish tone did seem to resolve over time. Andrew's tone issues didn't though he does fine. After the six month no rolling thing he was in PT but he never missed another milestone until jumping which is one even mild low tone kids seem to struggle with. He jumps now and really the tone isn't holding him back physically except he's not coordinated. I'm low tone too and I did fine in life! So maybe he will grow out of it and even if he doesn't grow out of the tone stuff it may not hold him back.

My son with hypotonia was Definitely showing signs at 2/3mos but the doctor wasn't really concerned at them time because of his age it was hard to really say if it was still in the range of normal or not. By 4mos when he wasn't holding his head up at all we got a referral to EI.

I think it is something that I would definitely keep an eye on. I think poor head control and being floppy is still within the range of normal at 2mos, but I would talk to the doctor about it.

Good luck at your appt!

Looking back on pictures and thinking more I think what concerned the ped. at that age was more his ability to lift up his head/neck on his tummy. I do think there is a range for head control. Andrew was low tone in other places too--especially in his trunk. So it wasn't just head control.

interesting. i don't recall how jet's was on his tummy and i know we don't have any pics cause he HATED being on his tummy.

cash cannot lift his head at all when on his tummy. he doesn't even seem to try though.

From the look of that picture of Jet I'm sure he would have done fine! Has the ped. seen Cash yet for the two month check?
