I went yesterday to get my DS his religious exemption and was told it was only good for one year. I was told I would have to come back each year and wait(which was 7 hours) to get a new one. Does anyone know if this is true. No where on the exemption does it state it is only valid for 1 year and all the websites I have been searching saying nothing about a 1 year limit.

Any info would be great.

First you shouldn't have to wait any time. You should only be picking up a form.

Wow!! I didn't know you had another little girl, Renee!! Congrats!

About the exemption, I just went through the process. While you are picking up a form, it's not just "a form" you grab and go. You officially sign it in the office. It's on cardstock. This is the actual card that will be given to the school or daycare to put in the file. My little one is taking music classes at the public school so we had to submit this in lieu of vax records.

As for how long it lasts, I don't know about that....I don't remember seeing an expiration date or anything about that in the statutes. My thinking is this same card will stay in his file..but who knows.

About the long wait, my wait was about 20 minutes so it was no big deal.

I got mine at my local health dept in the vaccine office.
I only waited about 15 minutes for the Dr. to be available and have my certificate filled out and ready for me to sign. My kids have them and all my siblings have them and we've never been told anything about them expiring after a year. The certificate also doesn't say anything about it expiring.

I was just wondering about this the other day. We're moving to FL this summer. Dd is only 3 and I'm planning on homeschooling. Do I still need to got to the health dept and do this for her?

My understanding is that if you homeschool, you don't need the exemption.
Here in St Lucie County, there was hardly a wait, and they never mentioned it expiring...

For us, as well, it was a simple trip to the local health department- filled out a form with the vaccination nurse. From what I understand, a lot of the employees are unclear about the rules or deliberately try to make you think the process is much more restrictive (the lady we saw, for example, acted like we weren't eligible for an exemption because we got DS his first round of vaccinations (didn't know we could get an exemption then)) although it is clearly stated in the statutes that that doesn't matter. So I wouldn't worry about it expiring.
Homeschooled children, I believe, aren't required to be vaccinated, though if you don't have the form and you end up at the emergency room, they might give you some grief.
The http://www.know-vaccines.org a pp mentioned is a godsend.

I also want to say hi to all the other FL moms out there! : I'm new to the boards, but I'm really excited to be here!

I, also, got mine at my local health department. Since I was applying for admission to USF, I had to get this form for myself. It was actually a pretty tough process: the receptionist had no idea what I was talking about, and the doctor was on lunch. She said he'd call me when he got back. He did, which surprised me, but he kept talking over me and demanding to know what "religion" I was, and said I'd need to get a letter from my preacher. I followed the guidelines on the site posted above, and told the doctor that he was not legally allowed to ask me these questions, that I could not be legally forced to tell him what religion I was, and that I needed this form within the hour. (I still can't believe I kept my cool while saying all this! I'm very shy under pressure...good thing he couldn't hear me trembling, lol! ) As a last resort, he started spouting off the reasons why vaccines were important, and grumbled when I thanked him for the info, but still insisted on my exemption. It was ready to be picked up within the hour, and there was/is definitely no expiration date.

We got our exemption at the local health department too, and had to wait quite a while. Our local health department is really bad when it comes to doing things on time so waiting is the norm. Once we were called in we filled out a paper and then signed the cardstock paper. We had to come back in 3 days to pick up the official exemption form. It has no expiration date and we got ours over a year ago and DS has not had any problems getting re-admitted into school with it. In fact, he was just accepted into the VPK program with that same exemption.

Both of my kids will be homeschooled and all of my siblings are, but we got the exemptions anyway because I had a friend who ran into issues in an emergency room with CPS and I think that if she had the exemption, even though it's totally unneccessary (legally) in that situation, things may have proceeded differently.

Thanks for the info everyone. It seems that the health departments in FL are not informed of our rights.
