When health officials say that the flu vaccine will result in a less severe case even when it is a different strain, are they lying?

I've never run across any evidence that that's the case. I wouldn't say they're lying, but it's far from a fact that mis-matched strains mean the shot "lessens symptoms". I guess it's more of a popular myth?

how do they even prove their statement? what are the parameters for which they describe decreased severity? decreased duration of illness? decreased severity of symptoms?

<div style="font-style:italic;">Just think about it for a second. How could that even be possible?</div>

That is what I was wondering. Isn't that like saying the measles vaccine will result in a less severe case of chickenpox?

Well it did in my case - don't know how but I was sick for 3 days with<br>
( documented by swab) flu. Never had fever over 100 and just had the body aches for 2 days. My neighbors who did not have the flu had 103 for a week!

you are comparing 2 different illnesses so you cannot say that it decreased the severity.<br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch">

Yeah...I have a friend who has a (non-fluvaxed) daughter who gets ear infections with most minor colds, and this year the kid got a small cold and she took the kid to the doc to check for an ear infection, and out of curiosity the doc tested for flu, and that minor cold turned out to be influenza.

Not only comparing two different illnesses, but also different immune systems, etc. Unless the same person could experience the same illness with the same levels of stress, nutrition, and all the other variables, I don't see how an accurate comparison could be made.
