DH is military & got the flu shot- neither of the kids, nor I did. DH got sick 4 wks ago for 2 wks (fever, aches, coughing, stuffy, sneezing felt like he was hit by a train)... DS 1 has been sick 2 wks now (2 days low fever, runny nose, productive cough, sneezing) he's almost well- DH caught it AGAIN from us a week ago & bad again... I felt bad for about 5 days same s/x as DS 1 (I swear Odwalla C Monster cured me ), DS 2 has cough & sneezing, stuffy nose... is it the flu or just a cold? What's the difference? Any idea how to quit playing 'musical virus'? I've changed all bedding & wiped down the house

Sometimes it is hard to tell. We've had some severe colds that included muscle aches and low fevers.
The main difference though is that a flu comes on suddenly and all at once. Colds often start off with sneezing or some other symptom and build over time. Also, while you can run a low grade fever with a cold flu normally has high temps associated with it. Flu's last longer too though, again, we've had colds that stayed on for two weeks. Flu symptoms are generally more severe but I've had colds that were pretty severe. So I think the main things are temperature and suddeness of symptoms.

As far as preventing the sharing. I think flu is hard to prevent sharing (sodium ascorbate vitamin C and build the immune system/plenty of rest). I would of course do the things you are doing (paying special attention to using alcohol or door handles, phones, and other similar handled often items) and also sanitize the toothbrushes. I use xylitol nasal spray on everyone too and I do think that helps prevention.

Flu normally has fever and temps
Colds do not

Keeping children apart from everyone in the house is key here. No play,no interaction,no sharing foods.

Homeopathy has non invasive methods of dealing with the flu please see link;
www.homeopathic.org
Some remedies that work verry quickly; Ars.bell.gels,puls,cal carb, phos, rhus t.
I don't agree. They will pass it back and forth to each other until their immune system is built up and it can not longer attack them.

It's not the germ but the terrain....type of thing here.

I would concentrate on getting everyone resistent to the virus whatever it is, flu or cold - what does it matter?

That is why as soon as we start to come down with 'something' we get out the "big guns" - SA, GSE, CLO, echinacea....etc. and we build up to be strong enough to avoid it.

Right now my grandsons had it and their father (who had a flu shot) has been fighting it off several times. Their mother, grandfather and I have not had it even though we were the ones taking care of the sick kids. The kids got over it, they had it twice actually, but their father is worse than both of them were together.

Like I said, dh, dd, and I did not get it because we been keeping loading up with SA ect.

I've always wondered about this issue of passing germs back and forth, and "re-infection." I guess I have assumed that whether or not it was the flu, a cold, a stomach virus, etc. that it didn't matter because once the body fought it off that then you had the antibodies in you system and were then immune to it. I thought the one exception to that may be if a bacteria had caused an illness, that you could get sick a second time from that same bacteria, but that when it came to everything else that you wouldn't need to worry about getting that same illness again. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I agree that it is pretty much impossible to prevent the spread of something once its in the house. I think it is just how it works. We do all the same great, hygenic things and sometimes DH and I get it and sometimes we don't. So far, since DS was born he has gotten EVERYTHING that DD has had. Despite our best efforts at stopping it.

This theory might apply to a holistic household of herbal/homeopathic/vitamin takers. But this does not work for school children in a public classroom. No matter how strong your childs immune system might be,there is always a few kids in that same class that are taking suppressive allopathic cold/flu meds. Yes their symptoms are not there due to suppression but their virus/bacteria is speading to all in the classroom.

A parent must be extra vigilant when winter months bring on sickness, and i dont mean taking cough suppressants, cold pills,tylenol,motrin................again this DOES not make a well child! Only a suppressed SICK child, speading germs. Look into holistic alternative methods of medicine used for thousands of years in the cases of Ayurvedic and chinese herbals. (and are still used today by over half of this planets population)
I don't think you can get the exact same cold or flu bug OMama. What I do think though is that when you are sick or just getting over sickness you are more vulnerable to whatever bugs are out there. I also wonder sometimes if something can mutate given enough time to travel through a family but I know of no studies on that! Anyway, my reasoning on toothbrushes has more to do with toothbrushes coming in contact with each other or the same surfaces than getting your same cold over and over again.
