DH and I just decided to TTC#1! However, we have a trip planned for late October to Vienna and Prague (we live in the US). It's possible that I'd be pregnant by then. No more than 15 weeks, even if the impossible happened and we succeeded on our first try...

Assuming everything looks healthy, is there a problem with traveling internationally at that point in pregnancy? I know I probably will need to take it slower than I would otherwise, but that's OK. I've also read that flying is OK. What about time differences and food?

You'll probably be tired, but there shouldn't be any issue traveling at that point. Drink frequently (especially for the long flight), make sure to get up and stretch your legs so that you don't develop clots and have fun!

I think you should be totally fine, from everything I've read. Apparently the suggestion is to avoid long flights near the end of pregnancy (when circulation is sluggish, which might put you at increased risk of deep vein thrombosis), but I haven't heard of any restrictions at the beginning of pregnancy. DH and I flew to Dominican Republic for a week when I was 11-12 weeks along, and we didn't get any warnings from my doctor before then (other than the usual precautions about drinking only bottled water and being careful with what you eat).

I always tell nosy, over-zealous people "I'm pregnant, not sick or disabled!". I refuse to sit on my butt for nine months worrying about every possible risk.

Good luck TTC and enjoy your trip! Who knows, if TTC doesn't work until then, you might just come back with a little extra souvenir!

While pg with my first, I flew to Mongolia at 9 weeks then came home at 17 weeks. While pg with my first, I flew to N. Ireland at 6 weeks then came home at 11 weeks. No problems either time.

Good luck!

Unless you have some other health issues, travel at that time shouldn't be a problem at all. In fact, if I had to pick a time in the 40wks to travel, that would be it! Chances are, you will be over any morning sickness and you won't yet be big enough to be really uncomfortable (except of course in the airline seats, where everyone is uncomfortable!). I've made long trips in my first, second and third trimesters and those in the early second were definitly the easiest. Good luck, and happy travels!

I flew from Alaska to Vegas when I was 4 months along. There were no real problems, but I felt pretty uncomfortable the whole time. I have pretty long legs, so I'm generally cramped on a plane, and I think being pregnant just made it that much worse. I was stuck in the middle seat both ways, though, so I guess my suggestion is to get an aisle!

I just went skydiving Sunday
: and I am 6 weeks along. I already had put a deposit and would have lost it. So I had those wierd pressure changes thatyou get at above 12,000 feet and I did fine except for a headache which I think was from the heat of the afternoon earlier. I can't imagine flying being much of a problem unless you were very far along. Worse for you is if you had a bad cole. I flew back from Maui in June with one and developed a horrendous ear infection.

GL TTC and enjoy your trip!!!

Thanks for all the advice! My health is fine, and I'm fairly short/medium build, so I'm not horribly uncomfortable in airplane seats. The original plan was to start TTC on the trip, hoping for an extra souvenier
Which could still happen!

Wow. I am definitely in the minority here. We travel a lot, and for me, it always is so awful in early pregnancy. The first time, we were in Africa for weeks 8-14, and I am still trying to forget it. Nausea is really a crap shoot, but a lot of women (70% or more) experience SOME nausea, especially peaking at 8-9 weeks. Now, this time, we conceived this baby in Mexico, and we have only traveled in the US since then. We are going to Texas on Thursday, and not only am I still nauseous, but now I have heartburn.
I must be some kind of medical anomaly. Seriously!
I am hoping the trip will distract me a little. I am 16 weeks.

I just think you will enjoy your vacation more if you are TTC on your vacation. I know so many people who are super fertile on trips. Something about being relaxed, I guess. Anyway, just some thoughts from the most nauseous lady I know -- me!

Congratulations on your decision! Don't be surprised if you get pregnant on your first try.

ETA: more grim news. I couldn't find anything that I could eat. You want your regular comfort stuff, you know? I can't tell you how unbelievable yucky that trip was. We actually drove, like 2000 km from Northern Namibia to the Eastern Cape of SA in a car with unreliable AC in the back seat. Yes, the back seat of a real old Toyota. Ugh! Flashback!! Oh no!!
