Hi there

I am in a dilemma about flying at 27 or 28 weeks (or at all) as I am pregnant with twins. Then I would be there for a week or so working. It could go fine or not, but have a work commitment I was hoping to keep, I am self-employed so it is ultimately up to me. One midwife says yes. the other says no so not sure what to do! I am doing fine at 25 weeks and no signs of premature labor, eclampsia or other symptoms of a higher risk pregnancy, which twins are considered.

Any input would be appreciated!

I'm 23w pg with twins and I think I probably would do it. For me, it would depend on the length of the flight, where I was going and what I would be doing when I got there. If you do go, I would get a name and number of a midwife or dr in town, make sure to rest a lot (I'm already finding I need to lie down for an hour every afternoon!) and try and get any comforts you can from the airline...ask to be upgraded, have a better seat, etc, etc.

Hi there

Thanks for the replies, I am still in 2 minds but am thinking of leaving a week earlier, and taking it very easy while I am there. I am flying SW so it is not a direct non stop flight but sometimes that works better as I can walk around and also rest in between legs. They do have some large leg room seats though, or should that be belly room?!

Anyhow thanks for the inputs and votes!

I wouldn't fly at 28 weeks with twins or a singleton. I flew last summer at 27 weeks to Lake Tahoe and had spotting and was admitted to the hospital with contractions. They don't know for sure what caused it but it could have been from the altitude change (not from flying but going from TX to NV). This time around I don't want to take any chances.

I probably would, provided I was in good health and it wasn't too far and good medical care was available in case of emergency.

Just a suggestion from someone who flew to Europe in the 6th month with a singleton, you might want to check out an airline that has first class. I ended up feeling quite poorly during my overseas flight and they took pity on me and let me sleep in first class even though I had a coach ticket.

Can't have that option on Southwest (as much as I like them)

I wouldnt. Just because I am a paranoid freak!
Both my sister in laws flew around 24 weeks, then the next week were admitetd to the hospital for perterm labor. One lost her baby at 26 weeks. The other was hospitalized for 10 weeks.

Thats enough to keep me from flying.

Thanks for the info, it really is hard to know what to do at this stage and hindsight is everything. I know people who have travelled later and been fine then others have had problems so it is hard to decide what to do. If it were just for pleasure I would not go, but it more complicated if I don't. Oh well decisions, decisions!

Congrats on your twin pregnancy!

My twins are seven months old. I would not fly if I were you. I had an incredibly uncomplicated pregnancy until I went into preterm labor at 29 weeks. I had been working full-time as a kindergarten teacher, but then had to spend six weeks on bedrest. Nothing terrible happened, my babies were born very healthy at 38 weeks, but it was still scary to go into labor so early. Around 27-29 weeks most twin pregnancies measure the same as a full-term singleton pregnancy. It is a common time to go into preterm labor because your uterus thinks it's gotten big enough.

I don't know that flying would induce labor, but I just wouldn't want to be so far from home at that point in the pg.

Check out the mothering multiples forum if you haven't already!

Thanks for the insights, and it does concern me about premature labor, I measured 30 weeks at 25 weeks, which for me is big as I have a small torso and am only 5'4" with not much room to put them! My uterus is already above my rib cage. I am more and more inclined not to go and to play it safe, I guess hindsight is everything!

PS Your babies are adorable!

Thanks for all who voted and posted!
