hi ladies -

i read this board alot - i don't post very often, love to read though

anyways, here is my basic question. Could my 17 mo old sons bright red itchy cheeks be yeast/candida??

short hx: dairy allergy as infant (bloody stools) eczema since starting solids, always a crappy sleeper, progressive - persistent HORRIBLE facial red itchy rash that only goes away with rx steroid cream, RAST IgE test showed allergies to wheat, soy, dairy, egg and peanuts.

So we've been doing that diet for about 3 mo - with only moderate improvement. I called our allergist and she suggested to do a trial of zyrtec. i didn't do it for 2 mo - but i caved this week when he woke up bleeding and itching. after 3 days it has helped a moderate amt, also.

however - i recently read about candida in toddlers, and I am wondering if that is our culprit. He occasionally does have diaper rash, but we CD so it is not horrible. And he hates me to look in his mouth - but I can see white on his tongue. He does nurse alot still - but i dont' think it should be white. ALSO, I have an itchy rash on my breast - that is what started me thinking of it.

he and i are otherwise healthy people.

also, his IgE showed a dog allergy and we still have the dog
, my son LOVES the dog. we are very clean though.

So, should i call his ped for an rx for nystatin??? or diflucan or something??

I already do probiotics - and i upped it to twice a day. i also limit sugar - i guess i should do more so.

thanks for any input

First of all, it doesn't matter how "clean" you are if you have a dog and your child is allergic to said dog. He will still react. Doesn't matter how much he loves it either. It's still causing a reaction. Our allergist said that consistent exposure to an allergy like that makes it more probable that it will turn into asthma. Just something to think about.

It is possible that there's yeast. But I'd let the doctor make that determination.

It's possible that you're dealing with IgE allergies AND food intolerances. Maybe keep a food journal and see if anything triggers it more than anything else.

i don't know that i agree with the dog allergy thing - if we never would've had the IgE lab drawn - we never would've know that he was 'allergic' - he never shows any direct reaction to the dog. and his pediatric allergist said that his food issues were more important and causing more problems.

i don't know.

thanks for your input anyways.

I heard allergy tests often have false positives - if hes showing no reaction to the dog perhaps hes no really allergic or only slightly so. I'm not sure if the cheeks are a sign of thrush but the white tongue sounds like thrush. Traces of milk should dissapear shortly after feeding. Along with the rash on the breast it sounds like a possibility. I'd call and ask the pedi.
