have you ever had to pull your kid out of school during an outbreak of a VPD?

My dd told me today that her friend Maddy is out with the Chicken Pox. My dd has a religious exemption filed with the school, and we had to sign something stating that our child would be excluded from school if there were an outbreak of any VPD.

What exactly constitutes an outbreak in the schools eyes?

My DD has a religious exemption filed at her school too. I dont have an answer to your question, but I THINK, a couple cases of mumps, or measles, or something like that would be considered an outbreak. I dont really know if CP would be considered an outbreak, or not, since getting vaxed for it is relatively new. I'm curious to know too

I didn't have to sign anything stating that we would take our child out of school if there were an outbreak... Actually, there was an 'outbreak' (like two cases) of chicken pox this year and all that happened was that the school nurse called and told me that there were a few cases of chicken pox. It was actually a message on my machine... with no further instructions. I guess they were 'alerting' me...? that said, one of my other friends, who lives in Massachusetts, did have to sign something stating that she would take her son out of school if there were a chicken pox outbreak.

1 kid out should not be an outbreak and if they were to try and say so I'd fight it. Several kids IMO would be if they were in the same class or section of the school. If they don't call, I wouldn't ask for a month or 2 until it dies down and then ask for clarification on what an "outbreak" is. It also could just be something that they have you sign to cover their butts or 1 last attempt to get you to vax.

There was a chicken pox "outbreak" at DD's and DS's former public school (neither go there now), and no unvaccinated child had to be pulled from school, although it does state in the exemption I signed that they would have to. I guess the school didn't consider chicken pox much of threat, considering most of parents were trying to get their kids exposed.

My now 12 yr old in sixth grade has not ever been sent home from school due to an outbreak, and he's had an exemption since he was 5. My 8 yr old is in 2nd grade, hasn't been sent home either.
