My 6yr old ds is almost done w/ primary math 1a and I just ordered 1b. It the teacher guide helpful at the lower level of Singapore math? So far I am able to figure out the concepts that they are teaching but wonder if having the TG will be useful.

I didn't use the teacher's guide with BeanBean, but I did add lots of manipulatives on my own.
It just didn't seem necessary to me-- I understood what they were getting at, and I know how my kid learns so it's not difficult for me to explain things in terms that he understands, kwim?

How did this work? Do you look ahead at what's coming up in the workbook and do some manipulative stuff ahead of the workbook? Or did the workbook and the manipulatives occur at the same time? Does that make any sense?

I guess I looked ahead, but not too far. I never really knew when he and I were both going to be in the mood for math at the same time. Sometimes he'd bring me the book and start asking questions, then I'd look at it and show him what they meant with manipulatives. Sometimes I'd read the next page and decide in advance what to do with him. It wasn't a lot of work for me, it didn't take a lot of effort, but I must say that I'm a very mathematically inclined person as well as BeanBean's mother (and the person who therefore knows best how to explain things to him).

We bought the textbooks this time...which is our first try at a textbook. dd asked me to get something with good explanations....but she doesn't like them. It didn't even occur to me to get the teacher guide. I do tell "mathmatics stories" along with the other kinds of stories I tell her.

She loves math and likes to play with numbers. She turns everything into a math manipulative. I think we're somewhere in 1b...and I'm not particular mathematical.

But then my dd really likes their workbooks and the software....
