Let's see...dd had a diaper rash (raised red bumps) for about 6 months. She has been cd for about almost a year. I tried EVERYTHING I could think of to get rid of it and nothing worked. This is what I tried:

- Just a diaper rash? Went coverless during the day
- Stubborn diaper rash? Used Weleda diaper cream
- Detergent allergy? Nope
- Buildup? Lots of hot water rinses
- Yeast? Used Nystatin cream
- Aquaphor ointment cause I didn't know what else to do? Helped a tiny bit

- Went on vacation and stayed in a hotel for 5 nights and after the 2nd night it was gone...for the 1st time in months!! I put her in the same nighttime diaper (OV Loveybums with organic wool cover) and pj's I always do. We were rash free the rest of the vacation.

- Got home & went to bed (we co-sleep) & in the same nighttime diaper...she woke up with the rash again?? Hmmmmmm I thought. This is really wierd?? What is the difference between our bed and the hotel bed...then it dawned on me...MAYBE IT'S THE MATTRESS PAD! The hotel didn't have a mattress pad on the bed...just the mattress with a sheet on top. But that's wierd because the mattress pad isn't touching her skin??...hmmmmm.

- So I took off our mattress pad (standard cotton top with polyester fill) and put the sheet back on. Within 2 days the rash was gone again! My dd is allergic to our mattress pad!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never would've believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes.

I did more research and her rash I believe was really eczema (eczema can occur in the diaper area) which is why the Aquaphor worked a little bit. She is either allergic to polyester (breathing it) or she could be allergic to the dust mites living in the polyester? I haven't quite narrowed it down. Our comforter also has polyester in it which I had to replace with an all cotton blanket because it caused the rash to come back.

So I just wanted to pass this information along in case it may help someone else. I'm so happy to have finally figured it out

that's some pretty good detective work! I'm sure your daughter is glad you figured it out!

My ds4 gets excema in the diaper area too. Even toilet paper will flare it up. That's how I started learning about cloth.

thanks for taking the time to post about it.

Could very well be the dust mites.

I was just reading an article online yesterday that contrary to what was once believed synthetic pillows, quilts, etc, harbor more dust mites than down filled items. The article was targeted at excema, allergy and asthma sufferers. Of course for the life of me I can't remember where I was reading it. On Babycentre.com maybe?

Anyway - I'm glad you figured out the problem for your poor kiddo!

So were the raised red bumps excema?? Just curious-my daughter has a diaper rash-raised red bumps-and I can't seem to get rid of it-although I do think it has something to do with her diapers...we have only been CD'ing for six weeks or so and it has happened since then...she has super sensitive skin...and since it somewhat clears up after she has been in a sposie overnight (not fully CD'ing yet)...I am still thinking it is something w. the diapers.
Interesting though about the dust mites-I believe it! That is awesome detective work!

So glad you solved the mystery. And thank you for sharing it here... I am sure that there will be mamas here that will benefit from your detective work!

Perhaps you should change your name to "TreehugginSherlock"?!

hmmm...that is very interesting. I'm glad you shared this! My DD has had a horrible rash all over the front of her diaper area as well as a 1/2 dollar sized spot on the backside of her hip that just won't go away. I even tried switching to sposies to see if it would help. It is definately excema, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what is causing it! I had introduced yogurt to her and thought that was it, but its been 3 weeks w/ no more dairy and it isn't going away. DH is going to have a fit if I tell him we need to replace all the pillows! Why is the excema only showing up in the diaper area? That seems weird to me...

My dd had it in the exact same area as yours...only on the front. There was no rash anywhere else. In fact, she had eczema when she was 2 mo old. It was the same raised red bumps but it was only 1 patch about the size of a quarter on her leg. Ended up she was allergic to my eating peanut butter. She has had no rash since then till this "diaper rash". I never heard of eczema being in the diaper area.

I really think it's the dust mites she's allergic to. I think they like living in polyester like the pp mentioned. I have had our mattress and pillows encased in those dust mite covers that you can buy at Target for several years now. It never dawned on me that there could be dust mites in our mattress pad and comforter.

That is so cool that you figured that out! I think it could be dust mites. I'm very allergic to them but I think it affects my lungs more than skin.
