Another mother (whose child was sexually abused by an adult teacher in his life) and myself have been working off/on for several months in finding a way to reach out to the community from a service/advocacy perspective. I give a yearly talk about prevention and awareness of child sexual abuse at my DCs preschool. This past year she was present and launched into her own animated response about the dangers, in particular from people within your children's own circle. It was apparent that this was her first opportunity to speak to a group of people about the subject, but she did it with great passion and ability. Really, she just needed an audience.

We have spoken many times through the remainder of the school year about opportunities, even to the point that she wanted to start her own non-profit organization because we could not find what we wanted already out there in place. I even asked here in the Surviving Abuse forum if anyone knew of organizations, but never received any responses (and since the search feature appears to be disabled in this forum, I can't find the original post).

She was given a tip, upon which she followed up, and we have decided to become involved with the Darkness2Light program. A national, well-constructed organization specifically for the purpose of reducing the incidence of child sexual abuse through public awareness and education. We both plan to become facilitators to train others in our area and provide a specific curriculum for educating groups of adults in protecting the children within their sphere.

If anyone here has felt the urging to "do something" about childhood sexual abuse but wasn't sure of a good place to start, I urge you to check into Darkness2Light. One can become a Steward of Children through online training, if one wishes. Here is an outlet for advocacy for those who feel compelled to take their need to prevent out to the wider world.

That is really, really nice. I would like to share that site with my MOPS group. We had a speaker from the police departement come and talk to us about internet predators and child abductors but child sexual abuse was not discussed at all, and I think it is so important to bring that topic to light BEFORE it is too late. Thank you.

Yes, I agree. Its a subject that far too many adults turn away from in their own lives and the lives of children.

PM, I will check that info out too when I get a block of time. Thanks for posting it and being passionate about it.
