so, my DH is european and circ'ed. i asked his mom the last time i saw her why they cired (he told me it was when he was 6, but he didn't know why). she said "oh, it was my fault. i didn't pull the foreskin back like i was supposed to when he was a baby, and it stuck." poor MIL! i told her, no! the advice now is to not retract, so she did the right thing. i'm glad i asked, i could tell she felt really awful about it (30 years later even).

anyway, i'm wondering how severe his adhesions had to be for him to be circed (remember, this is europe, almost no one is circed there, so i think they really had to do it). i'm also wondering if there's any chance adhesions can be genetic, because my DD is 2 and has a really severe case of labial adhesions. she never had even one diaper rash (she's been out of diapers for almost a year), never sat in a wet diaper... nothing. we're expecting again, and i'll ask our pedi, but i'm wondering if anyone here has any insight on adhesions. surely if we have a boy, and he has adhesions at 6, circing won't be the first line of action anymore?

(i wish i had more information, but i didn't want to press MIL. i know lots of foreskins don't retract at 6 yrs old, but i guess there was something else going on? DH doesn't remember.)

so, anyone have any thoughts?

thanks!

My thought is that your dh was just very unlucky to get a cut happy dr. Even in Europe you will come across them Unless it was so bad that he couldnt pee he didnt need circ. If for some reason there was damagae and the sphincter was scared so badly it was closing off I cant imagine why he would have had to be circed.

Umm... You DH didn't have "adhesions" in the sense that they were not supposed to be there. He was just not retractile yet and fell in with a BAD doctor.

As for any future sons, you will never know if they have "adhesions" unless they become very comfortable with talking about their sex organs as teens. Because in reality, no one but the owner of the penis will ever have reason to retract the foreskin until sometime before or during puberty.

Yeah, there are cut happy Drs in Europe as well. Sadly my DH was cut by one as a child. I seriously doubt that his needed to be done either, but knowing that they told parents to retract and scrub regularly (As my mother told me she was told to do so with my brother, but she never did) I suspect that had a lot to do with it (resultant infection and subsequent circ)
