Hey everyone! I made a coule posts but haven't introduced myself. I'm Melissa and I'm so glad I found this site!
Here's my story.... after 5 years of TTC our son, I thought I knew everything there was to know about pregnancy/babies. When my son was about 9 months old I was slapped in the face by a dose of reality when I FINALLY looked up circumcision. My DH and I never questioned circ'ing, like many other parents we thought it was something you did when you had a boy. We thought it needed to be done. Never once thought about my intact adopted younger brother. @@ So there I was with my circ'ed 9 month old in TOTAL REGRET about the decision we made. I'm so thankful my DH is very open minded and I told him what I found out and he agreed. He regrets it as well, just not as passionate about it like me. Anyway... it was good to read some of the posts on the "if you regret having your son circ'ed" thread because I can relate so much to what everyone said. I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling the way I do. Anyway... we're pregnant again and hoping for a BOY....we'll find out on Wednesday.
Anyway, it's good to be on here with parents with similiar interests.

Hi Melissa!

Nice to have you join us. I'm sorry you and your husband had to find out that infant circumcision is unnecessary. I bet your doctor or midwife didn't even mention that little bit of trivia.

Good luck on your new pregnancy, and please, stick around, this issue needs all the advocacy it can get.

I am sorry for the pain that may have occured with such a sad discovery. I want to applaud you on being open-minded enough to hear the Case Against Circumcision, in spite of the fact that you had already made the decision to do it. That is really quite rare. It can be scarry to question it, once you have chosen it. I admire women/parents who can do it and pay them quite a bit of respect.

Congratulations on your latest pregnancy. Best wishes.

Thank you for welcoming me!
I must say I WAS really stupid during my first pregnancy. First off, I went to a family Dr.... thinking she was an OB/GYN because she delivered babies.
: Never once did she mention circ'ing. I went along with the flow with the Drs. know best mentality. @@ I was induced and it ended in an emergency c/s.
Didn't read up on BF'ing either so I went in blind, so that only lasted a day and a half, and then circ'ed. So I'm so glad we've been given another change to bring another baby in the world and we WILL make better choices! I don't see that Dr. anymore.
Anyway... I'm babbling, lol.

Welcome and congrats on the soon to be baby! Let us know what it is when you find out

You shouldnt feel too bad though, I mean, I was the same way with my first. I went to my family OB, got induced, my ds had all sorts of issues from his traumatic birth (his heart stopped, he had a ton of meconium, seriously low blood sugar, and then went to the NICU because he was shaking constantly). I was also never asked about circing. The first mention of it was while I was in labor, and like you I said, ok, everyone does it right (and around here the rates are only 30% so no, everyone doesnt do it!!)? Well, the one and only reason my ds was left intact was because medicaid wasnt covering circ anymore and I wasnt about to pay for it (obviously I wasnt exactly determined to get him circ'd, lol). I didnt start looking into it until I met my dh and we realised he was having issues because of his circ. That was when I jumped on the bandwagon and realised how lucky I was that ds didnt get done.
I still made mistakes with my second baby, but I tried to do things differently. I went to a CNM at a birth center (still ended up in the hospital and induced though) and obviously knew I wouldnt circ, though we had a girl anyway. Everything was better the second time, but still not great. It wasnt until my third, when I switched to CM's that I got what I was looking for. My fourth was a wonderful homebirth. We all just have to find what works for us, and that is what works for me. Of course, a lot of women dont have four babies, but I dont think I would have stopped until I had my perfect birth, lol.
Good luck and let everyone know if you have any questions!!

Thanks so much Cari! I'm so glad I've done plenty of research on everything, from circ'ing/BF'ing/VBACs. I trusted my Dr. too much last time! Now I go to an actual OB and CNMs and I love it. My sister who just had a baby in April went to the same practice and she loved them! So we'll see how it goes. Now that I'm more informed about a lot of things, I'm going to be 1 of those annoying know-it-all patients, lol. About the circ'ing question... when my sister was in LABOR, the nurse asked if she was going to circ and my sister said she's having a girl. But the nurse insisted anyway just in case. And my sister siad we're undecided. She told me later that they weren't going to but she was in labor and didn't want to be bothered, mainly because her BFs mom was sitting there and she knew she'd have some idiotic things to say! I can't believe they ask while a mom is in labor!! @@ Anyway... my sister knows the regret I went through (going through) and we had talked about circ'ing while she was pregnant. She looked it up on her own and they decided they wouldn't. 1 less sister I have to worry about if she ever has a boy, lol. I'll definately post what we're having tomorrow. My appt. is at 10am!

You would be surprised how many mom's here were badgered in labor about circ. Boggles the mind
: Then after having the baby asked over and over if they were gonna do it by the same dr/nurse after telling them there were not going to.

That's one of the reasons I'm making sure it's in my chart. My mom also knows that our little boy is not being circ'd, so she can stand up for me during and after labor if the docs are harassing me about it!!

GoodMomma, good for you for having the courage to admit that you feel that you were wrong in your decision! Many parents wouldn't, even after being shown evidence that they had made the wrong choice.

Welcome! Congratulations on your new baby!

Thanks for sharing your revelation about the truth of circ. It is can be hard to learn the truth and I applaud you for being willing to take in that information. (Now that you've tackled the circ issue, vaccines may be something you want to look into as well.)

Yep...my hospital was great in pretty much every way, and even they asked me when I was in labor. Of course, when I got to the hospital, I was 8cm and in transition...
But for me, when I was squatting there on the bed and the nurse was like "Are you having him circumsized?" my "HELL NO" response was probably more forceful than it really needed to be.

Oddly, almost 8 years ago when my daughter was born, I don't remember being asked if we were circing. We didn't know she was a girl, either. I guess it was probably just assumed.

Thanks everyone for such a nice welcome!
It's so nice to be in an area of the internet with so many that feel the exact same way I do about the subject!! In reference to the vaccine comment... I actually have looked into it, lol. And will continue to do so..... I'm 1 step ahead.
Anyway... happy to be aboard.

I just read this (been busy) but wanted to give a big
to your sister. Shame on those nurses for pushing a cosmetic surgery for a newborn while the mom is going through labor. That's disgusting. It's too bad a few hospitals haven't been sued for that. Shouldn't soliciting cosmetic surgery in such a situation be illegal?
