Formula for Disaster
Baby formula is the fourth most popular item to shoplift.. Do the proceeds support "terrorism"?

Talk to just about any supermarket manager or security guard and they'll tell you that baby formula is one of the most popular items shoplifted from store shelves.
In fact, the Washington, D.C.-based Food Marketing Institute told newspapers that baby formula was the fourth most common item stolen from grocery stores they surveyed in 2004. Of the 10 most shoplifted items, ranked by FMI on its website, two are baby formula products.

But it isn't desperate mothers stealing the formula for their babies' nourishment. Sometimes it's drug addicts. And more often, it's organized crime rings--many of which funnel their profits to the Middle East, according to authorities.

"The potential threat to the health and safety of unsuspecting consumers is most evident in cases in which infant formula is stolen, repackaged and then resold to both knowing and unknowing wholesalers, who then sell the infant formula to government food programs and discount stores," Swecker told the committee.
this alone just made 9 months of pumping exclusively totally worth it. holy crap. that is terrifying. does that really happen???!!!
Yes, this is true. I've heard reports of this many times over the years. In fact after 9/11, a Canadian investigative news program did a feature on this, and traced a formula theft ring right to back to known terrorists. It also showed how it was repackaged.

As long as people continue to procreate, babies will need formula.
I procreated and did just fine without formula thankyou.
I don't doubt it. In the seedier towns around here formula is kept behind the counter with other "controlled substances." In the CVS type places it's either kept behind the counter or tagged with electronic devices.
Formula is used to "cut" (dilute) cocaine which is another reason it is a popular target for shoplifters.

And also in my upper middle class town with a low crime rate (at the drug store, not the grocery stores.)
I know all the CVS's in my area have the formula behind the front counter, right above the cigarettes.

Umm, TigerTail, that isn't quite accurate.
(Not trying to ruffle feathers.) I work for a Narcotics Task force, what was said about formula being used to "cut cocaine" is partially true. I won't go into details, but drug heads/makers do steal the formula to make illegal drugs with them as well, not just to sell back for cash. Major player and drug of choice for baby formula is Methamphedamine. So, do not let something so innocent cloud our judgement, this is real and a real epidemic unfortunately. Meth is the new scorge and is probably not too far from a backyard near you. It is easy to make and is a Mom and Pop friendly business. There is tons more I could say about it, but that pretty much covers the formula part of it. Sorry for the disappointment, believe me, it makes me crazy knowing what I know and knowing that it is so easy to pump our children with this garbage and innocent infant food is a main ingredient.

I am just
! Disgusting!

I'm looking forward to the days when if a woman in physically/medically unable to breastfeed, the community women take turns as wet nurse or milk banks become so popular Nestle goes out of business.

I am so disgusted that formula is killing / harming / denying better nourishment to children around the world and then helping to kill / harm / addict them when they get older.

Good info, thanks for sharing.

Wow!
I recently went to Walgreens and saw that their formula is in a locked case in the baby aisle.
I had never seen that before and found it quite odd!
Kinda strang ethat they stick right beside the smokes... eh? that should tell you something.

Couldn't they just use Cremora, or powdered milk?
It doesn't seem like the inconvience of buying it has increased breastfeeding rates
I wouldn't want to go through that hassle every time I had to buy it.

Viola,
You would think they would do that, but apparently, infant formula is to purely and finely created that it is better to use and get a "better product." Pretty sad huh? I personally have breastfed my babies, but I have had to suppliment with Enfamil on occassions, I wasn't thrilled about it, but I was thankful for the formula.

Well, it has only RECENTLY been put behind the counter, because of our legislation and cold hard proof that it was being used for the making of drugs. So, in short at the time, it was VERY convenient and small enough to stash. Makes me sick and if you go to a small convenience store and see formula out on the shelves beware. They are either selling to support this activity or the formula is going to expire soon. Sorry for the yucky news but, keeping our children healthy and safe is my first priority no matter who may get offended. I hope this info is helpfully to all of you parents out there.

Guess what Janice, this is true. The drug money can and has been funneled to the monsters that hit is from the back on 9/11 and have been for a long time before and after that. Hold your babies, BF, FF and know as you do this you are part of those that are honest loving parents. If you see it, report it! By the way, I LOVE THIS FORUM! There are so many of you incredible Moms and Dads and I am honored to have found all of you, the wisdom is priceless!
