Formula Feeding Mommas

My son had really bad constipation when he was an infant and we ended up switching his formula after the 2nd week of being born it was nestogen and we switched to Hipp (I live in Armenia so they dont have many formulas neither do they have any that we have in the USA) Anyways he is now 5 months and has had gas since first it was bad then it subsided but now its bad again I mean he wakes up several times in the night in pain he cant sleep still hes just not able to get comfortable with sleeping it seems worse at nite. I have found Similac in one of the markets around here and I was thinking of switching to that now since its what they use in the USA im assuming its better. His gas doesnt get better the only thing we give him is this natural thing they have here that we have to give him after he eats and it just makes him fart for like 30 minutes and then he is back to grunting and crying and hes just in pain. So I guess my question is. Has any mothers out there changed there childs formula at this stage and if so did it work.. I think it would work cause the formula here is just awful I guess thats why everyone breastfeeds.

Thanks in Advance!

I'm sorry you haven't received any responses as of yet. Most people on this forum breastfeed and some are anti formula (to put it mildly.) I actually had to use a bit of formula in the begining (my son is over 6 months now) as he never took to the breast (I pump and provide breastmilk in a bottle - too long of a story). I too used Similac though he didn't seem to be affected with constipation or gas. I think it would definately worth a try to switch considering how much pain he seems to be in right now. I'm not sure how old he is but if he is on solids, you could try prunes if they have them there or prune juice. Also, you could try infant message (you may want to google it -- there is a belly message that could help) or bring his legs up to his belly and roll them around or pump them up and down to help move the gas. Sorry your babe is in pain and best wishes!
You should be fine switching formula...
Also, I second bringing his legs up to his chest and sort of bicycling his legs, that always helped our lil guy when he was gassy. Also, lay him over your knees so that one of your knees is putting pressure on his tummy (gently) and rub his back...that used to almost send Evan into a trance.

Our son was SO gassy for the first few months, and when we went on liquid concentrate formula it got SO much better. Any powdered formula always made him super gassy.

Hope you find osmething that works for your lil one...good luck!

thank you so so so much yeah I know how the breastfed mommas on here are thats for sure. Yeah I do the massage thing and the giving him lots of warm baths and pumping his legs but doesnt seem to work all that well.

Anyways yeah he is 5 months and hes eating very little solids they dont have prunes here in armenia neither in a jar not much jar food at all but anyways I will buy some prune juice that HIPP makes and I will try to wean him on the similac. Thanks so much for your comments its nice not being criticized for feeding little booger formula.

Could he be reacting to the dairy? Could you get soy formula or a hypoallergenic formula and see if that made a difference? Regular formula has milk proteins, and even a lot of BFing moms can't even eat dairy because just the amount of cow milk protein that goes into breastmilk can make babies gassy and constipated and cause pain.

Good luck!!

yeah I dont know if it is a reaction to dairy I dont know how I could tell the difference cause sometimes hes ok and then sometimes hes reallly bad like for instance he hasnt slept for more than 2 hours straight for about 4 months now.

I dont even think we have soy but I will check this country is ridiculous like yesterday I was looking for puree and they sell it run out of it and dont order more they are not consistent here so im just hoping where I buy this Similac they dont run out of that as well..

I just want to try something else cause I know its the formula.

Just wanted to say that my DD didn't sleep more than 2 hours straight until she was 17 months old. It's very normal at your DS's age.

Good luck!
With my foster babies, I prefer similac formulas. Whe I use the powdered formula, and shake the bottle there is far less bubbles in similac formula.
Maybe you could try what I do- I put water in the avent brand bottle, heat it to warm temp, put one drop of mylecon (simethicone) -a gas relieving infant drops. Then I add the powdered formula, shake and feed the baby in the sling slightly elevated . This seems to make a difference with my babes. I also have noticed bowel movements are easier with similac than enfamil.

Babies that cannot tolerate milk based formulas (if there bottoms are always raw after a poop- I try a different fomula). I try the lactose- free based, then if still symptoms- the soy....after that, if there still seems to be allergy symptoms- Ailementum is my next choice. Ailimentum stinks - makes the baby smell too- so really it is rock bottom last resort in my case. I do not switch formulas (unless the baby is reacting worse that before starting) until I finish a full can of powder 3-5 days for a newborn.

I have been known to collect breastmilk from plentiful mammas. If this is an option for you, even 4 oz a day makes a golden reward....

best of luck!!!

yeah well I wish that he wouldnt wake up crying he cant get comfortable he moans and cries and then he farts anyway im going to try switching formulas just to for myself that ive done everything
My son has to be on formula ( I couldn't find anyone to pump for me.... boy did I look). He's been on Soy since day 3 and recently he started spitting up a lot. I tried a lactose free dairy and it didn't work so I switched back to the soy. I'm glad I tried it though because he wasn't worse for my efforts (which I worried about).

I second what others have said about the liquid vs the powder. I absolutely can't feed ds powdered formula. He gets gassy and constipated on it. He seems to do really well on the soy liquid. I think his spitting up last week was from him starting to teeth, not from anything else.

Good luck to you.
We ended up having to switch formula 3 times with my dd because of her tummy issues. The gas drops didnt help us at all either, and we tried every bottle/niple we could find.

In the end carnation ended up being the only thing that worked for us, but you probably dont have it there. Similac was too strong for her I think? It just didnt agree with her tummy. She had alot of the symptoms your describing. Also, just wanted to add, that if you do switch, make sure you give it a good week before making a decision about the formula. It takes a while to get used to!

Good luck
I to was unable to BF. I produced NO milk. I put my twins on a homemade goats milk formula at 2.5 months and they have done wonderful. The Doctor has been amazed. No colic, they have gained weight well, at 13 months weigh 23 & 26 lbs, and no illness. I would have done anything to BF but could not and after much research felt goats milk would be the best for my babies and it has proven to great for them. I took info from Dr. Sears and Dr. Weston in coming up with my formula.

Good luck,
Cindy
For constipation, you might also try some diluted pear juice... that's what my DS's ped suggested when he was <6mo and constipated. It did seem to help some, and once he was more regular, we stopped. I keep a small bottle of organic pear juice around even now in case he needs it.
The sugars in the juice help get things moving. Pear is better for this than apple. They also suggested karo syrup (corn syrup), but I thought that was icky, so I went with juice.

maybe it's the bottles you are using, i used to use ones that dont have the baggies in them and dd was so gassy all the time but then i started using the ones with bags and squeezing out the air and it solved the problem.

And remember -- formula is the FOURTH choice on the World Heath Organizations list for babies. First is direct breastfeeding, second is the mother's own milk pumped and given to baby, 3) milk from a donor/nursemail, and 4) formula.
I do not know what is available to you there, but our tummy cure all (esp. in infancy) is chammomile tea. Just a spoonful usually took care of their tummy troubles.

I just skimmed the thread so don't know if this has been mentioned, but does the formula have the new Lipil stuff in it? The DHA/ARA? I know from some mainstream boards I'm on that lots of infants don't tolerate that very well, and even switching from Lipil to regular formula of the same brand can make a huge difference.
OP your baby will be fine if given formula... millions of babes have survived (and thrived on the stuff) I can tell that you don't dispute the benefits of BF are ten fold when compared to formula... on that note... we use Similac Advance and for a gassy tummy we use Gripe Water, which can be found at Whole Foods and online.
