Infant formula is still incredibly expensive. It is liquid gold," Tussler said. "You can't substitute anything else, or you jeopardize a baby's health."

Liquid gold isn't that the term lactavist use for colostrum. :

That story is sad on so many levels. It really is a horrible statement that Tussler person made. The formula companies could probably feed that poor baby (who they have made dependent on them) for a couple of months on the amount of money they have spent on advertising to me alone : .

I think "liquid gold" is referring to the insane prices of formula. The fact that it must be locked up to prevent low-income mothers from stealing it is really disturbing and sad .

PS. I know that human milk is best for babies and I breastfed my kids for about 2yrs each.

There are a lot of things that are pricey but not good for society (diamond mining). Very poor choice of wording. Does it mention ANYWHERE that this woman very very likely could've breastfed & had prices be a nonissue?

God forbid poor (& middle class, these days) women be educated that breastmilk is free, and usually not that big a deal, WITH SOCIETAL SUPPORT- someone might feel bad.

It doesn't say she very likely could have but it also doesn't say why she didn't breastfeed. But I see your point for sure.

Seems to be common anymore for one "side" of an issue to co-opt terms that more accurately apply to the "opposition".

Fascinating reversal of reality. See how she's made the substitute into what's needed, rather than the substitute for real human milk that formula is.

that's the part that I noticed right off hand and thought to myself:

'well she could have substituted breastmilk...'

This article is really misleading. My LLL leader and a friend all refer to breastmilk as liquid gold (actually, so does my DH). Them saying there is no substitute for formula made me really irritated as well. I hope the new guidelines for WIC make a difference where more moms are encouraged to bf. It's free!

Also, they lock up formula to keep drug dealers from stealing it to use it to cut cocaine with. I didn't think this was because so many mothers were stealing it to feed their babies.

And yeah, when she was talking about how hungry her baby was and how she ate all the time, I was just thinking: RELACTATE!

It'd be disturbing and sad if it was low-income mothers stealing it, but it's actually worse, it's illegal drug producers who steal it to stretch out their supplies and formula resellers who steal it and then sell it to the low-income mothers without regard for expiration dates or proper storage or anything.

And just because I'm a numbers person:
From Kellymom.com formula is between 7 and 31 cents per ounce.
From Goldprice.org gold is currently 626 dollars per ounce.

It really turns my stomach to hear "them" co-opting the term "we" use for colostrum like that.

I'm so saddened by this, on many levels. I'm writing an email to the editor, though I doubt it will be published since I live in WA. I'll post it when I'm all done writing it.
