Are there any out there? We're relatively new foster parents and having a hard time reconciling our crunchy lifestyle (and it's cost) with what these kids are coming from.

Would love to hear how other foster families acclimate their foster kids to a more wholesome lifestyle... especially the older ones (ours are 8yo & 10yo).

not fostering, but i mentor kids (10, 12, and 15) who come from the 'hood (well, we live in the 'hood too, but arguably are not of the 'hood) and value the bling and it drives me up a wall!! i feel very unsympathetic toward the $100+ sneakers and such, although i have no problem spending that on books, educational games and puzzles, etc. there are also complicated hair care issues for the girls (we are caucasian, they are biracial including african-american) and grooming issues -- can't play in gym because won't chip a nail?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!?

I'm not a foster parent but wanted to say "THANK YOU!" I was a foster child (came into the system late - at 16) and think so much of foster parents. I had a wonderful experience and my Mom (foster) is my best friend, was at my 1st homebirth, and is Grandma to my children.

Thank you for opening up your home, heart and lifestyle to these kids!
