I'm wondering if it's safe for my 4 month old. I talked to the lady who makes it, and basically she said that she would use it on her child, but to cover herself, she can't say one way or the other about whether I should use it on my baby.

Here is the description of the ingredients from her website:
Essential oils of peppermint, rosemary, lavender, citronella, pennyroyal, and eucalyptus added to 100 percent aloe vera juice make this a great product for your dog’s skin and coat. Ruff Lauren is a fabulous natural insect repellent for you humans, too!

What she told me today is that it's mostly aloe vera juice and that the EOs were added in verry small amounts. I don't know much about EOs and babies. I have read in some places not to use any... and the one that she definitely recommended reading about was the pennyroyal. All the cases of harm I read about were babies who ingested it in tea form. She did say that it would probably be safe to spry it on his clothes rather than directly on his skin. I don't know. I don't want to put something on him that isn't safe, but I also don't want him getting eaten up by mosquitos (we came home from 4th of July fireworks, and he's got quite a few bug bites). What do you think?

I'm not an expert but I think the biggest worry with a product that you're going to apply all over like that would be skin irritation. I'd try applying it to a small area and waiting a day or two to see if there's a reaction.

FWIW I just discovered how well lavender works on bug bites. I put it full strength on some bites of mine on the 4th. At bedtime I went to reapply and I couldn't even find the bites!!!

For a baby I might dilute it a bit in a carrier oil (olive oil should work if you don't have anything else on hand). I know lavender is one of a handful of EO's that can be applied full strength but I'm not sure about using it straight on such a young baby.

I don't know my EO's either... I know when my guys were little I would put the insect repellent (local lady made it and sells at the farmers market here too ) on a piece of cloth and saftey pin that to the back of their clothes so that they could not reach it and less likely to have direct skin contact. Big guy was probably past a year in age before I would apply direct to the skin and with my little guy, now 4.5 I put things on his clothes because of his senative skin.
