DH, DD and I flew out to the Boston area last week to look at houses, meet with preschools and meet with home birth midwives. I had 3 appointments slated with the midwives. DH was really sick so I had to cancel our first appointment. I was really bummed as this midwife didn't have flexibility in fitting us in any other time of the week. Our 2nd visit was with an awesome woman. She has been a midwife for about 22 years and delivered close to 600 babies. I loved her style and level of confidence. She didn't beat around the bush with some of the more difficult questions concerning things like GBS, PPH, breech births and obstetrical backup. She readily gave us several handouts that outline her experience and everything she is involved with- including that she trains EMTs on OB/GYN and deliveries. She would only be about a 30 min drive from where we plan to live and it's in the opposite direction of the city so much less prone to traffic and such. DH and I also met with another recommended group of midwives but we just didn't feel the connection and they are seriously on the other side of Boston (in Cambridge) which took us over an hour to get to. I just can't picture myself blocking off 3 hours every time I want to go for a visit and fear that the midwives would get stuck in traffic trying to get to me during labor. My labor with DD was only 4.5 hrs. I also wasn't excited that they couldn't give me any handouts and were sort of wishy-washy about certain questions.

For those of you planning a home birth I wonder how many midwives you have interviewed?

I only interviewed one. Our interest in Homebirth was actually sparked a bit b/c of this midwife. If I hadn't connected and loved her, I don't know WHAT we would be doing...

Congrats!

I totally feel comfortable with this midwife. Sort of how I felt when we met with our doula for DD's birth. I just felt a connection there. The other midwives we met with seemed a bit inexperienced to me and although I've heard wonderful things about them there just wasn't that spark. Now I just have to figure out how we'll pay for it. I was planning to quit my job before the baby is born however my health insurance would probably cover a portion of it as it's a PPO, DH's health insurance is an HMO which I'm pretty sure means it's a no-go.
