Four measley little pounds? I wanna cry.

I worked out over 1200 minutes in the month of March. I am eating healthy. I'm not snacking at night. I'm not snacking on unhealthy foods AT ALL. I got on the scale on the 1st of March. I got on the scale today. I lost four pounds. That's it? I even gave up chocolate for Lent, right there, I should have lost four pounds! (hide) I literally started crying right there on the scale. Five weeks/four pounds? I'm keeping a journal, about 1800 calories per day, less than 15 fat grams. I'm drinking plenty of water. I'm nursing and my milk supply hasn't suffered, so I know I'm eating enough, but really, truly. I do The Firm for the most part, and it's a combo of cardio and weight training, so I'm working out correctly. WTF is going on? Why should I continue if THIS is what I'm going to get?

I'm so sad and angry and frustrated and just plain old sad.....4 pounds? Someone, give me some encouragement, something to keep me going, cause this isn't doing it. My clothes are getting a little looser, but not much. I'm doing everything right, even the nutritionist I met with today can't figure it out!!! Help!!!

four pounds isn't bad. if you loose four pounds a month in one year you will have lost almost 50 pounds. Not too shabby at all. Slow and steady wins the race. Plus ifyouare working out you are toning and as you tone you will be building muscle mass which won't register on the scale but you should see a difference in how your clothes fit.

I really have to be careful how much bread and fruit and root veggies I eat. those are killers for me even though in theory they are perfectly fine. But I have discovered when i eliminate those things the weight just melts off. if I keep eating them even in what is moderate amounts by most standards I can work out until I collapse and nothing, zip, zilch . . . . So I have to really limit them to a bare minumum when I am trying to lose weight. My point is, that even though it looks good on paper your body might respond diferently to some things. I basically did an elimination diet to see which foods reacted weird with my body chemistry. i am only now starting to add things back very very slowly.

I only lost 8 pounds the first year I was doing the Firm. but my body changed so much that I refused to stop. I was frustrated too by the number barely moving on the scale. My clothes were looser too, like you had mentioned.
The second year, the weight number started to fall. I lost 22 more pounds!

It'll happen for you. As I get older, I find my body likes to play games with me with the weight number. It's hard.

Those Firm workouts are a good thing. Keep going. YOu will be so buff, you'll be lovin it!

Good luck!

1200 minutes???
you are truly amazing, mama!!! it's gotta be frustrating to lose 4lbs but that's a pound a week, which is safe & healthy. on top of that, with all that exercising, you DEFINITELY built some muscle, which will provide you all kinds of stamina for your hectic days! don't get discouraged- you're an inspiration to me!!
you're on the right path & well on your way.

I feel like that about the slow progress too. It can be so frustrating. I have to keep reminding myself though that even though I want to lose weight, it's my HEALTH that is the most important. It sounds like you have developed some wonderful healthy habits. You are very inspiring!
because you are bf'ing and you exercised that much your body is probably holding onto everything in order to keep your supply up.
eat more. you didn't get enough nutrients. (of course, eat more REALLY nutrient dense foods - leafy greens and that kind of stuff) your body doesn't want to let go because it thinks you're in trouble so it's holding your fat as savings in the bank for REALLY hard times. i will almost bet my weight loss on it! (and if you're here, you know that's a BIG stake!!)
also consider grains and the idea that when you eat them your body figures (from it's relatively un-evolved "thinking") that it's hard times (like winter) and should hold on to fat to keep you warm and supply you with food should real famine come.
You are building muscle which wieghs more than fat. I started back running and lifting weights recently and I'm still bf'ing;and, although I fluctuate a few pounds back and forth, my clothes are looser so I know I'm improving. I lost the remainder of my baby weight after my first daughter months after I stopped nursing. I think you're doing great just to get that work out time in.
Keep it up!
I agree with the general theme of the previous posts. "Low carb" gets a bad rap and there is taking it to extremes but a LOT of common foods could be called "empty carbs," i.e. most forms of processed grains (bread rice etc) and most dairy.

There was a study in the news recently that found that lowfat diets had virtually no effect on weight loss. I'm of the opinion that you need to consume fat to be healthy. Not the kind in potato chips or ice cream, but in eggs, fish, olive oil, etc. If the fat you are consuming is from fresh, whole food sources, it will generally be the "healthy" kind of fat as opposed to the unhealthy kind, and you don't really need to keep track of the number of grams. Just something to consider.

One more thing to keep in mind is that slow weight loss while BF-ing is actually a good thing. They say losing weight too rapidly releases toxins (which had been stored in your fat cells) into your breastmilk more rapidly than might be ideal for your little one to consume (i.e. over a period of time your child can metabolize that safely but too much at once could be harmful).

Four pounds sounds great!

Think about how muscle weighs more than fat, you worked out 1200 minutes? I'll bet you exchanged a little fat for a little muscle. Good job!!

I wouldn't count on the scale to tell you your progress; look at how your clothes fit, and how you feel - count on that!

Just as the other mama's said, four pounds is alot - contrary to what every diet ad says, you know those lose a bagillion pounds in 2 days!! Sort.

I'm on the Firm's board too, and on there, they've got this new to the firm forum. One of the FAQ's on there says this:

Quote:
"When will I see changes?"
From 1-8 weeks:
Look to feel better and have more energy.

From 2-6 months:
Lose size and inches while becoming leaner. Clothes begin to fit more loosely. You are gaining muscle and losing fat.

From 6+ months:
Start losing weight quite rapidly.

Well I can tell you once I hit that 6 month mark, or just shortly after it was very true, everything really started to fall into place. So for all you newbies this is a good guideline, not exact for everyone but a good one and be patient, you are on your way!
That sure helped me when getting some perspective on it... ALso I tend to look more at a measureing tape than a scale. The measureing tape (and how your clothes fit you) will be the best indicator of your fitness level, and how your progress is coming along.

Peace

Hope that helps!

You may think I am crazy but
YOU NEED TO EAT MORE!
If you are exercising that much, and nursing, 1800 calories is not enough!
How tall are you?
How much do you BF?
Seriously, when I would go to Weight watchers meetings, there were a few people in your situation. They were very frustrated. When they experimented with adding in more calories, especially a little fat or protien if they had cut that out, they began losing again.

Also, mixing up your calories can get your body to not fear starvation, thus slowing the metabolism. For example, eating 2000 5 days a week 1800 one day and 2300 one day.

I am amazed by your dedication to working out! That is awesome, and I bet you are getting wicked firm

Thanks so much, everyone.
I am going to reevaluate my calorie intake. I am not going to quit The Firm, no way, no how! It's helping me fight the depression that has recently threatened to overtake me.
and I have more patience and energy to deal with the kids when I'm working out.

Awww...
Thank you so much. I have been struggling with being motivated since this, but been forcing myself to work out
This morning, I was out running and realized that I felt good.
Silly, but I felt Good While Running
So, lose weight or not, look good physically for dh's homecoming in July or not....I am ENJOYING working out.

I would like to lose *some* weight before he gets home, but I have decided that my goal isn't to be a certain #, but to feel good. As silly as it is, with the things that have occured this year
I want him to find me sexy when he gets back, kwim?
If that's not vain.
:

Thank you so very much for asking. I remember when you posted that you were looking for pants, and then, a couple of months ago, you posted that you were looking for smaller pants. That was sooo cool! Congrats!

i've only lost 5 in a month (of hard, hard workouts- i spent 5 hours at the gym yesterday- excessive even for me, but just to say 'i know what you mean'); i hoped for magic on the scale, but really, this is healthier and more realistic. if you are doing cardio & weights (as am i- not on 'the firm', i am gathering a vague idea of what it is from this thread
) you are building muscle mass. take a serious look at yourself.

my belly is smaller, my back *much* slimmer (i think all 5 lb came from there!) even i can't gripe about not having those hideous 'love handles' (what a name for such a horrible pile of blub; i am small-boned and simply cannot carry it) anymore (even if i did wish i hadn't gained a lb back overnight after 5 hours at the gym! workouts like that should lift your boobs, correct your arches, remove blemishes, & trim your bikini line! i think i am disappointed when it doesn't do all that, lol.)

Oh please - my whole motivation is to look hot to my husband. the kind of hot where he mentions to the guys how hot I am. And, as I loose weight I will be updating my wardrobe, fixing my hair, buying new make up and making over all more effort (lets face it, a fit body is more fun to adorn
) oh and lets not forget skimpy lingerie
its a total hotty makeover all for my dhs pleasure and delight
