I was at the hospital dropping off someone today and decided to go up to the Prenatal and Breastfeeding Center. I talked to the nicest lactation consultant ever. She was soooo helpful and positive.
She's 1 of 2 that the hospital has and best of all, her services are FREE!!
She is available as long as we need her should we have problems. I cannot tell you how exciting this is for me. I explained all of the problems I had w/Ross and she was so encouraging. It just made my day!!

That's great Amy!

OMG, Katt2005...the only that could have made your LC experience *worse*, is to have found out she wasn't really a LC! :LOL Seriously, though, I would have had a fit! Did you complain? Did she think you were some kind of milk vending machine? Sheesh, some people!
I hope this time around things go a little smoother for you!

Amy! How nice to have that peace of mind!

I was lucky enough to have a fabulous nurse when I had ds#1. She took the time to show me the football hold and how to nurse laying down ... and to recognize that he had a latch problem and she even helped me resolve it. And she was NOT a lc, but had breastfed her children!!!

Katt-How mortifying!
:

I had a wonderful nurse w/DS who tried soooo hard to help us. She was due a month after me and I found out she's pg again and due a month before me this time. :LOL So chances are I won't have her.
But, I'm just tickled pink that Karen (the LC) knows me by name now and I can call her whenever I need her!!

I had that w/ my first, too! It was the most degrading thing I think I've ever experienced! I think that was even worse than the random nurses who came in to "check" me during his labor b/c word had gotten out about how fast I was progressing (2-10cm in 2 hours).

I was very p!ssed. I wasn't having any trouble latching him on myself. In the delivery room, the delivery nurse told me I was a natural pro. Well, duh! I watched my mom nurse my 3 younger siblings and my 2 aunts had 5 between them, all enough younger than me that I remember them nursing.

She didn't even ask, just came up to me, opened up my gown and started slapping the baby w/ my boob! I was like EXCUSE ME! I don't need any help, thank you very much! Ugh!

W/ ds2, no one did that to me. I did have a lactation nurse come and help me. My left nipple is twice the size of my right one (only during the first few months of breastfeeding tho, for some reason. LOL!) and I couldn't get him to latch onto the bigger one. She asked me very politely if I minded if she touched me to help. That's the way it should be! He was tongue-tied, btw, and I know that's the only reason I had problems w/ him.

I think some nurses just go a little overboard and get in a hurry. So instead of gentle rubbing your nipple over the baby's mouth to get him to open wide, they go all crazy and slap him in the face w/ your boob. At least that's what it seemed like when she did it to me. If she was actually slapping your boob, not the baby, I have no idea. That would make no sense at all. LOL!

Make sure to check to see if the hospital LC is available on weekends. I was told by the hospital that an LC would be available so I felt secure that if I had problems I'd get help. I delivered Sat. morning and then found out there was only one LC and she worked Mon.-Fri. so it was 48 hours before I saw the her. Luckily I wasn't having any major problems.

I hope she is gone now!! :LOL
If she's still there you should ask her how she'd like it if you slapped her boob.

indie-They're not available on weekends, but I'm supposed to have the baby on a Monday so hopefully I can see her first thing Monday morning if I'm having problems.

As uneducated as some of the nurses are about breastfeeding, she probably thought that slapping your boob would make you let down milk. :LOL

I'm glad your LC is avalible. I have a friend who is an LC and the big thing she always mentions is 'drop the butt'. Baby doesn't have to be paralell with the ground, and dropping the butt down can help with reflux issues. This big push of hers with 'drop the butt' has come after helping a family who's 3 day old baby was released from the hospital on Zantac! (or something similar)

But, do make sure she's avalible on the weekends!!The one where I gave birth to ds wasn't avalible after 3 pm.
