I just logged into my account to check out Freecycle for the day and saw that someone was offering formula. I know that according to some code that there are rules for what can be done in regards to formula (like no free samples can be given by a company...I think...). I don't know very much about it but I would like to shoot the mods an email letting them know and asking if they could make that one of the things not allowed to be offered maybe??? I don't know. I need help writing up an email to them though. I just don't know enough on this sort of thing. What should it say?

It bugs me when I see it on freecycle, too, but I doubt they'll ever stop people from offering it.
I would e-mail the mod, but they will probably respond in a very rude way saying it's the persons business to do what they want with it and blah blah blah.
I had a mod totally freak out on me because my signature was anti-circumcision.

I wouldn't expect it to change anything but if it will make you feel better definitely go ahead and write. what gounds you would have to ban the give away of formula on freecycle though? Do they have rules about food? There are no laws about what people can and cannot give away to each other. It would have to be within your freecycles guidelines.

Or if you really want to have some fun you can offer to pass on a free sample of breastmilk

If food is not prohibited from being given away, then I will bet there is nothing that can be done about it.

Besides, maybe the person who responds to the offer might be someone who cannot BF for whatever reason and could use the formula. Perhaps someone might use it for a puppy or kitten that whose mother has been killed. You just never know.

I know on our freecycling list you can not offer breast pumps because of the disease risk so I doubt you'd get by with offering breastmilk.

i am in the minority here, but i don't see a problem with it. we all know what horrible things the formula companies do, but if a mama is not breastfeeding and is not or any assistance, but could use the help why would you not want them to have it? what if it was down to that can of formula or whole milk for a 4 month old?

OT, what I do have a BIG problem with is the people who I see SELLING coupons and samples and then the idiots who BUY it.
i donated my formula samples, i don't see anything wrong with freecycling them.

I don't either...
I am a freecycle moderator in my town and there are no rules against "food" being given away. Heck, I gave away 2 cans of formula on freecycle. I don't see a problem with it. The formula I gave away actually went to a foster mom.
I agree- if somebody already has the formula in their home and want to give it away, that's what Freecycle is for- to keep unneeded stuff out of landfills. Coupons for free formula are another story altogether- but my local Freecycle group has banned all coupons anyway.
Formula fed babies have to eat too. I have donated formula on freecycle before and don't see anything wrong with it.l
