So, I'm really excited about two opportunities I have in the last two days to talk to nursing moms and encourage and support them. I wish these situations didn't even exist, but I'm glad I knew about them so I could give some advice.
1. Yesterday, there was a post to my Freecycle group titled: "Wanted- advice on soothing fussy baby". In the post, the mom said that her two week old wouldn't stop crying and refused to latch on. She sounded soooo desperate. I sent her some personal advice, along with links to kellymom, mothering, and our local LLL leader's #. Someone else sent her kellymom too, I know, because it got posted to the whole group.
Today, she posted a thank-you to the people that sent her advice, and she basically said that she didn't know anything because this is her first baby! My heart is crying out for this poor woman who seems to have virtually no support around her for any kind of parenting issue, and it's so bad that she has to come to FREECYCLE for it!!! So, I sent her another e-mail today just to reinforce the LLL stuff, and to let her know that it will get better. I shared some of my experiences from those first few wretched weeks (I tried not to scare her though!), and I think it really helped because she sent me back an e-mail thanking me and talking about the LC she's seeing.
2. Today I posted some baby stuff on Freecycle that I was getting rid of, some of which are these cloth diapers that I got from another Freecycler but didn't like. Anyway, a girl e-mailed me about the baby stuff and started to ask me about cloth diapers because she is interested, and she has a baby who is about a week and a half old. So, when I e-mailed her back some cd info, I asked if she was breastfeeding. She e-mailed back saying that she has supply issues and is supplementing, but is determined to be successfull at bfing (this is baby #3 and she's had supply issues/failure to thrive with the first two). Anyway, long story short, we were e-mailing back and forth all evening about breastfeeding, and I gave her a lot of info and resources that she sounded really receptive to. She's coming over tomorrow to pick up the stuff, so hopefully we'll get to talk more then too.
