So my iron is a little lower than I'd like it to be here at 37 weeks, mostly because, I think, iron rich food has just been gross and exhausting to me the past couple months. I either didn't like the taste, or it made me feel heavy and full, or it gave me heartburn. So I'm trying a last push to pep up my iron and in general, give myself a boost. I've got ds's placenta in the freezer, and honestly, it's sounding kind of appealing.

It's been in there 3.5 years. It's wrapped in a chux pad and inside a ziploc, so the freezer burn will be minimal. We weren't prepared to do anything with it last time; this time I have elaborate plans for the new one. I have a dehydrator on loan, if that would be the best thing to do with the old one. But I kind of just want to eat a little piece. Or make a smoothie.

But after 3.5 years, is it too far gone? I've read that the B vitamins are shot from freezing it, but I've never seen a clear expiration date for freezer placenta!

Well, to be honest I would treat it like any other piece of meat. I would not eat any food product that was that old. I would imagine the nutrients etc. would break down over time. I never even eat a food product that is even one day past its expiration date. But then again I don't do frozen meat, I buy fresh every single day, because I don't like the texture, etc. I like to get it as fresh as I can. JMHO.

I also think you're not supposed to put a placenta you plan on ingesting in chux.. it should stay in a bowl or bag. I don't know why, but I read that somewhere.

I have a 2 year old placenta that I was wondering about, too, but I think it's just too old at that point. I wouldn't eat meat that had been in the freezer that long. I wish I had known better and encapsulated it, but oh well.
