I had bad PPD with DS, so I'm preparing to do what I can to try and avoid it this time around.

My midwife will encapsulate for me, but I'm terrible about pills. I just don't like swallowing pills and think I might get lazy about taking them. So I was thinking my other option would be fresh in smoothies (I've heard you can't taste it that way and I drank lots of strawberry smoothies sans placenta after my last birth).

With the pills I'd probably be able to be on them (if I was good about taking them) for a while, but I'd think I'd finish off the placenta with smoothies pretty quickly?

I'm just not sure if one way is better than the other. Any input? Especially if you've tried it both ways.

OK, so I posted this same thing, oh, about 13 months ago.....

I was not planning on any placenta eating but I too had concerns about PPD.

Well, I am SO GLAD that I had a placenta to eat b/c I lost quite a bit of blood plus puked all the bile out of my stomach and couldn't eat anything for 48 hours after my birth. (The birth was amazing, BTW - painless with birth ecstasy but also 6 hours of pushing out a 9 pound 10 oz baby with his head turned and his hand up by his face).

Anyhow, my postpartum was rough and eating the placenta did me a world of good. I ate it raw in smoothies and didn't taste it. I also boiled chunks, put them in the blender and then added to soups. Honestly, it tasted good!!!!
I can't believe I'm saying that, but it really did.

Interestingly, for a few weeks after the birth I didn't want to eat any animal meat. I am normally a happy carnivore but during that time meat-eating felt like the opposite of birth energy. It all just felt so DEAD. I cried when I ate some chicken. So, I was really happy to have the placenta. I also cried when it was gone but then I found some extra little pieces in the freezer and I was so happy! I still have one that I am planning on using to make a homeopathic tincture. You just use a tiny tiny sliver. The rest of the little chunk I will probably bury somewhere when I am ready to let it go.

I never thought I'd get all worked up about my placenta, but there you have it.

You can do both. A bit in smoothies, which I did and you can't taste, and then some in pills. I've reading that the drying process kills some of the benefits, so I would definitely do some in smoothies.
