How long has your longest online friendship lastest, WITHOUT meeting and finding out they're for real? Has anybody had a longterm online friendship and found out after years their "friend" was a fraud or psycho?

Well, I met my husband online. He told me he was a stalker at the time, and this morning he was in my bedroom, so he wasn't lying. :LOL

Actually, when I got my own AOL account in 1995, a woman e-mailed me and several other members on my birthday. Turns out we were all born on the same day in the same year (which we had put in our profiles), so she was just saying happy birthday to us. Through the years everyone has dropped AOL or changed screennames, but she still e-mails me. So we exchange e-mail every year. This year I was going to try and get her first, but I forgot, and sure enough, on my birthday, her birthday e-mail was in my inbox. I ended up chatting with her a little more, telling her about my children, and we exchanged some photos. I really don't know her at all, but we've been saying happy birthday to each other for almost 9 years!

Other end of the spectrum for me...I never actually met a person whom I have interacted online in person. My adventure here only began in Nov so I only am familiar with different users by their user names. I don't do any other online messaging boards.

I first started getting online with AOL 2.0. I think I was 14 or so. I met a group of people on a message board and became friends with a lot of them. We have since parted ways but I think I was on that board for 6 years.

I voted 3-4 years, but I'm not sure that is the real answer to your question. That's probably the longest I've kept up communication with someone that I have never met.

I met my husband online about 6.5 years ago and in person 7 years ago this week! (Aw... ) I have other friends that I met around the same time that I'm still friends with, but I've met them in person.

Dh say some of my postings on a Literary Society board while he was in Germany back in 94. He told himself he wanted to meet me and when he came back to the States, he did. I had no idea, until after we were dating seriously, that he was my internet stalker...

I was feeling left out of the MDC oldtimers talk and then I realized, HEY, I got to particpate in the first ever internet AP/bfing group, so

and we were satisfied with all our sideways smilies.

I have a group of online friends that I haven't ever met IRL. We all used to post on an AOL health board for people with SLE and other AI issues. The board went haywire but we all decided to keep talking via an email loop. This started in 97. We've only had one member drop the loop. The cool thing is that we are all different ages (from 29 to 65) and we come from a variety of different backgrounds and lifestyles.

Journey~ sorry, I messed up my response to your poll...I should have read your post before I voted. I have met my dearest online friend, and I don't think she is a psycho yet. My other dearest are here and I have known them about as long, not met.

I have been friends with some moms, about 15 of them, from a january 2000 moms email list. After 5 1/2 yrs, this summer I may get to meet my best friend from that list, Nicole, when she comes to the midest to visit family. She lives in California. I have met some of the other moms who live closer to me off that list, but not Nicole.

I had a friend named "James" I met online like 6 years ago. He lived in NYC which wasnt far but it took a while for us to meet. He always told me he was an artist and would email me pictures of his paintings. Then one day I said we should hang out. He had this whole complicated story about how I have to sign in with his doorman and use some other name because he was subletting and going by the name "Adam ..." It was semi believable. So I went up to his apartment and he seemed different than I expected. We still hung out and walked around Gramercy Park. Then someone yelled "Adam" to him and I dont remember how but he played it off somehow. So anyways when I got back home I did a search for the James name he told me and up came a bunch of websites about some famous artist. For some weird reason he was going by that guys persona when he talked to me.

No harm just really really weird!

Most of these people I have known for over 5 years now, we meet here at Motherng and have stayed together, even though many of them no long come here.

I have a group of friends I have known for about 8 years. We have an e-mail group. I've met a couple of them, others live cross country and we can't. We're the closest group of ladies, coming from all walks of life though.

Was it James Ensor. I come across that name a lot when I'm looking for people named Ensor.

I have a friend in ********* who reviewed my blog on his blog in 2001. We've exchanged Christmas cards and have chatted from time to time via email. He even sent two children's books to us when I was pregnant with Aleksander. I don't think he's psycho and we don't have any plans to meet ever since we live on different continents.
