From "I do it" to "I can't do it"...

Is there something I can do to help my ds who is now 3 change his attitude back to "I can do it myself"?

He's been chronically telling us that he can't feed himself anymore, can't get dressed by himself, can't can't can't...

Lately, I've been doing one of two things. For things like getting dressed, I've been offering to help - I've been dressing him so we can leave the house and I can get to work.

For things that I don't 'need' him to do, like eat (he is fully capable of eating on his own) I give him ample time with his food, at least an hour, and if he still doesn't feel up to feeding himself, I'll put his food away.

Its the chronic whining... the I can't... that is driving dh and I nuts

Yeah, you can wait until he's 4!

We just came out of that phase and it was tough for a while, especially since ds really needed a lot of help as well. I never "made' her do things but always helped if she wanted it. She still often wants me to dress her, which she has been capable of doing herself since she was 2.

Try playing games, like races. One thing I did was say, "You can't put your shoes on yourself, can you? If you do that I will be so shocked I will fall on my bum!!!"

Of course she knows its a game and loves it. Works almost every time!
I started by changing my language. I would say "Can I help you do it all by your self?"... and soon he was saying "I can do it all by myself" and then could also ask for help while doing so.
Mine is doing this too!

She demanded I come into her bedroom and pick up a tiny wicker basket at her feet. When I told her she could pick it up herself she stood with her body rigid and "Reached" down her side without bending, then announced, "I can't reach it! Pick it up for me?"

She also won't eat breakfast or dinner (oh god, DINNER is such a battle) without someone feeding it to her.
