This past week something very strange happened. All of a sudden, instead of hearing Mommy, mommy, mommy all day, I get called Mom by my daughter. It had never occured to me to even think about that but it is really the weirdest thing ever.

I guess she is growing up but it just came so suddenly and she is still so young (will be five in August).

Anyhow, I don't know why this is so weird for me. At what age did your kids switch to Mom and am I the only one to have some sort of emotional reaction to it (I don"t know what the feeling is).

DD started calling my mom at about age 4... I wouldn't say I had an emotional reaction, but I definitely had a reaction.

I did have an emotional reaction the first time DD called me papa though.

My DD is 4 1/2, and sort of playing around with the idea. She sometimes watches the cartoon Olivia, and Olivia calls her parents Mom and Dad. Sometimes DD will say "I'm pretending to be Olivia. You can be Olivia's Mommy. Mom." And she then calls me Mom for a little bit, but in a fake pretendy voice, not her real voice. She's also kind of funny about calling me by my first name sometimes. It's almost like these things are this big taboo, and she's getting away with something. I don't really mind either way, but for the most part I'm Mommy still.

My oldest DS was late 2 / early 3 or so when he shortened Mama to Mom, Dada to Dad, and Nana to Nan. It all happened on the same day! I was sad... I liked Mama better.

Now he's four and whenever he yells "MOM!" my 2-yo DS (who doesn't even really talk yet) repeats it. Sheesh... My "mama" years were short lived!

My dd is 7 and still calls me mama or mommy. She doesn't have a lot of outside influences to change that (no siblings, rarely any TV). Dh is baba, my mother is yaya. It's cultural, so I doubt that these forms of address will ever change.

My daughters have been doing that too, ages 5 and 3 1/2. It's still usually "mommy" but sometimes it's "mom".

Then my comical 3 1/2 year old sometimes calls me "mother" or "mamma", not sure where she even came up with those lol!

I don't have kids... but I'm 27 and I still say mommy and daddy-- so do my brother and sister.

When I get asked why... I always say "Well-- It's their name!"

My dd is 8 and still calls me Mommy. I don't particularly like Mom, so I hope she does not change to that. She calls her father Daddy. I think this is influenced primarily by how we refer to each other when talking to her. I will say, "I'll tell Daddy you're ready for him to come up and say goodnight." My dh says, "Mommy is on the phone and wants to talk to you."

I had a hard time when DD switched from mama to mommy. Then after months she switched back to mama.

Now at almost 4 she's started calling me Mother. It cracks me up, I don't know where she got that from.

As long as she keeps calling me....
