I am seeing an OB and I feel like every doula I speak with about VBAC doesn't "approve" or wouldn't be comfortable working under an OB setting, just a midwife setting. I've been thinking of switching to a midwife, but at this stage I am feeling more comfortable with continuiing with my current OB practice. However, I know if I do a doula is more needed if I'm with an OB than if I'm seeing a midwife. argh!

In my opinion a Doula should support the mother under any and all conditions that the mother makes an informed choice about being in. I am a doula in training and my midwife was telling me some things that she thought were important in supporting a mom and she said that being felxible and calm were the biggest assets.

Dont let this doula cloud your vbac plans. Keep looking for one that fits with you and I agree that a doula is improtant in a hospital setting.

Do you have any friends nearby who are supportive of your goals? My friend Steph is going to be my support person during labor for me. My husband is incapable of it. I know that she will help me. Her last birth was a homebirth with a very relaxed midwife who showed her DH something he could do to help ease her labor pains. She's going to have them show her how to do them so before I go into labor she's set to help me as she can.

I think you need to just keep looking. Any doula that says those kind of things isn't the right one. What do they mean they won't be comfortable? It's not about them, it's about the mama!

Maybe you should post in Doulas, Midwives, and CE's for recommendations, or in FYT.

That doesn't sound like a very good doula. A doula's job is to support the mother, no matter WHAT her choices are. I'd look around for another. Friends are ok, but they don't have the specialized training doulas do, plus they aren't always objective.

I agree, post in the doula section. Also, check out the DONA website http://www.dona.org/, Doula Network http://doulanetwork.com/, and ICEA http://www.icea.org/usdoula.htm to try to locate a doula.

You also could just ask the nurses at the clinic/hospital if they know of any doulas.

Good luck in finding a new doula and in your upcoming VBAC!
