Hi there - Thought I'd come learn from the experts. I usually hang out on the ttc 6+ months thread although I am right at the 1 year mark (after a m/c) and under the care of an RE now.

Just had my cd 3 blood tests and heard that my FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is "borderline high." We meet next week with the RE but I'd love to hear from others who have high or borderline high FSH:

Did that rule out some options for you?
What did your doc say about your chances?
Do you have any success stories to share?

TIA and best wishes to you all! Elk

I didn't get those results, but all the stuff I've read says that FSH will fluctuate in different cycles and to never take one test as definitive. I'd repeat the test.

Good Luck

I just got the results of my 3 day labs. My FSH was 12 and estrogen was 52. My RE said if I want another child I need to do an IVF cycle very soon. Her nurse told me not to expect as many eggs, and the quality wouldn't be as good as last time. When I went through an IVF cycle in 2004, my FHS was 5 and estrogen was 30. I had 11 eggs retrieved and 8 fertilized. 4 of those 8 made it to the transfer stage, and I got one baby. I am not sure if that helps any but I am in the same boat. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else has had success with elevated FSH and estrogen.

My fsh before I conceived my daughter was either 11.8 or 12.8 (?) and estrogen was around 48. I only had it checked once cuz the RE said at my age he knew it was going to flucuate, so I didn't bother checking again (and had to pay out of pocket!) I did conceive this cycle naturally but mc very early. Highish fsh just means that stimming isn't going to get the best results that cycle. You really need to see fsh over months time to see if there is a pattern of highish fsh. If your estrogen is really high it can bring fsh down falsely too (not that high at 40 or 50 though)

fsh does flucuate. Seeing a pattern over months time, would tell a better picture.

Good Luck!

I suspect my fsh was even higher some months (I'm sure cuz I was having hot flashes off and on some months--had just turned 40y) I delivered my daughter just shy of 42 (conceived naturally).

Thanks, bjunkie for the info and the encouragement. How great to know you conceived dd on your own with "high" fsh.

And sorry for the mc this cycle.

Elk, and others with higher FSH concerns, have you read Julia Indichova's book, "Inconceivable: Winning the Fertility Game" ? It is about her struggle to bring down her FSH and conceive a second child after 40. The book is easy to read and she has a lot of info in it about alternative medicines and all the hoops she jumped through. And it ends on a happy note because she got her pregnancy eventually after making steady progress.

Anyways, just had to toss that out there. I agree with PPs that you may want to re-test in a couple months.

Oceanmommy - Hey there! Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of it but will keep it in mind!

The RE wasn't nearly as worried as I was about the borderline numbers and we are going ahead with up to 3 cycles of Clomid & IUI. He didn't think the fsh numbers were high enough to jump ahead to IVF (although I'd completely prepared myself for that). So I'm excited to have a "move ahead quickly" plan but also happy that he didn't seem to think we had to go at breakneck speed based on those numbers.

JL'smom: I realize that your estrogen & fsh combo is probably what is pushing the RE to move fast with you, and my fingers are crossed that it works out!
