We put the same $ amount in, regardless of how much gas it buys.

We have a family and live in an area where driving just isn't an option. I typically fill up my van twice a month to the tune of 50-60 dollars a time. This is at Costco where gas is typically 10-15 cents a gallon "cheaper".

I have a massive 31 gallon tank. The good part is I fill up infrequently. The bad part is that it costs so much the pump forces me to do it in 2 transactions (it cuts off at $60) :

Hybrids, especially V6 hybrids tend to get worse gas mileage on the highway, so you may be getting better mileage now.

Not filling the tank up is the one thing in life that did/does make me feel poor. I remember in my younger broke days putting in $2 worth of gas and the low fuel light didn't go off.

Dumpster dive, wear clothes from the bag rummage sale, eat bean and rice all okay. Putting in $10 of gas when it take $30 to fill it, not okay. I also physically hate to get gas too so I tend to fill it all the way up and then drive it emptier than I should.

Europeans have been paying $6/ gallon for 15 years. But they have public transportation as an option. Perhaps now is the time for Americans to start talking to their representatives about providing us a more ecological and economical alternative and increase funding for public transportation (and design it so that people actually use it). This public service announcement has been brought to you by another consumer that is completely fed up with the gas prices and who also has no choice but to pay them in order to get from point A to point B.

This is what I do; $40 a month for my Silverado. Dh puts in what it takes to get to work, but now he rides his motorcycle when weather permits. It costs about $10 a day to drive is Altima to work and about $2.50 to ride his bike.

I've started putting in $5 or $10 here and there instead of $40 all at once. It also forces me to pay attention to where I am going and how much I have left.

It cost us $40 to fill up the tank and we have to make it last a week. Dh looks at it as he really watches the driving to the store, driving around for errands things and on his days off tries really hard to just not hop in the car.

Sometimes he does the five dollars here ten dollars there thing, but then the money goes to something else quicker if we don't spend it on gas and then we're SOL if we're out before payday.

We do the same thing. $20 each time. Like a PP said, this helps me to watch how much I'm driving. One thing that helps though is that I live next door to my mom and I just do my grocery shopping the same day as she does so we can ride together. (In her vechile of course! LOL)

Yeah, I paid 3.54 this weekend, and that was at Costco

Well I shouldn't complain then with getting it for 2.79 but darn it we had it under 2.00 a gallon this winter and this is crazy. Public transportation isn't an option for us as we dont' live in a city and I can't walk to anything other than the post office. We don't even have a gas station anymore in town.
It is a huge hassel having to worry about gas all the time and the cost of it.

We're over $3/gallon here, too. I don't even know what we'd do if we hadn't started reducing our expenses in life. We had some tight months, and I don't think we would have made it if we'd had to pay more for gas.

My DH is also riding his bike to work and then riding it halfway home and riding the bus half. The bus costs us $1/day, but it costs closer to $4 for him to drive.

One of our local grocery stores gives us "points" for buying certain items and then you can redeem those points to lower your gas prices.

I'm careful only to buy the items we'd use anyway, but still usually manage to get anywhere from $0.04 to $0.10 per gallon off.

For instance, today's gas price was $2.92/gallon but I spent $2.82 per gallon because I had enough points earned to get a $0.10/per gallon reduction.

With this plan we can only use the reduction up to 15 gallons. It doesn't get me a full tank, but I can easily get up to half a tank.

That's a pretty good idea! We are currently a "fill it up once every 10-20 days" family, as no one is commuting anywhere (yay) - but I bet having a gas tank that was always under half full might promote a more thoughtful approach to errands. I already try to walk for most of mine, but sometimes I just cop out.

I live in the city of Pittsburgh. They just CUT their public transport (rail and buses) by 15%, with an additional 10% to go into effect in Sept. if money isn't found by then...and base fares are increasing as well.

Yet, we're going to build a new stadium for the Pittsburgh Penguins...
