HI everyone
My ds is a little over 5 months old and we have been EBF since he was 6 weeks old ,before that I EP Bm , well anyhow i nurse him to sleep at nite and he seems to be the fussiest at the breast at that time of night ...what can I do , I am trying to keep track of my water and eat oatmeal .. I am not sure if this is a supply issue or a fighting sleep thing ?? Also we do not get to bed till 11:30 which I would like to change but not sure how , we have pretty much been child lead in this house , I do not want him to be the BOSS but I want to take care of his needs. I was hoping that someone had advice ,what can I do for these 2 issues
Thanks

Isaacs_mom,

Fussiness at the breast can have many causes but my first thought was that he's full but wants to keep nursing because he's sleepy, hence the fussiness. Is he hungry when you put him to sleep? That might help.

Could he be overtired by the time you try to get him to sleep? Try laying down with him earlier, say at 10:30 pm. Sometimes they surprise you and fall asleep even when you think they can't possibly be sleepy yet.

As for getting him to bed earlier, you can definitely encourage it. Have a bedtime routine, for example, bath, jammies, story, then nurse. Do the routine whenever you put him to bed for the night, whatever time it is. Try to put him down for his last nap early enough that he'll be ready for bed at a decent hour. You know best when that "nap cutoff" is. My 3 yo still naps occasionally and I try to wake him up by 3 pm just so he'll be ready for bed by 9 pm or so.
