I want to plant garlic. My gardening book says to buy a head of garlic, break it into cloves and plant each one separately in some soil.

OK, that's great, but... what side do I put facing up??

Also, does anyone know how much space the garlic will need to grow? Like, is one clove going to take a whole 8" diameter pot or can I put 4-5 cloves in a pot?

Thanks!

(PS I am not planning on growing full garlic heads but aiming for "green garlic", just as an exercise to see if I can actually keep it alive!)

pointy end goes up. you could try it a couple of ways, but i guess putting 3 or 4 in an 8 inch pot might work. we get so much garlic from our CSA i've never grown it.
