Hi All:

I just found out that I have gestational diabetes again. I managed to fail all 4 of my values on the 3-hour test... even though I walked non-stop. Oh well... I managed it once, I'll do it again.

My OB says that now they're treating GD with metformin and glyburide. I didn't know this. From what I can tell, neither has been approved by the FDA... although there are some medical journal on using both during pregnancy. Glyburide seems better as it doesn't cross the placenta. Metformin seems to cause a lot of jaundice (severe enough to require UV blankets, etc.)

If you're taking one of them, what has your doc told you??

I meet with the MFM specialist on Monday....

Peace.

Did he tell you what benifits you will get on meds ?
I had GD with both my pregancy's and after didn't find any good evidence that meds improved out come enough to warrent the risks.
I just got a blood monitor and tested 3 times a day and had a strict diet (no fun at all

I would be interested if new evidence has come out about this, I'm sure I will have GD with this one for sure.

My post isn't directly related to meds, but I wanted to share a bit of my experience with GD. I had it first time. I was labeled high risk and treated by an OB/GYN plus I kept my homebirth midwife. I was put on a diet and followed it to a T. It did not work. Went on insulin...

I'm in my second pregnancy. I've hired a new group of midwives that are fantatic. In ten years, they have never had a case of GD that required insulin. They advocate a diet of high protein, fats and very limited carbs (including healthy ones like fruit). I get 75 grams per day - 15g at each meal and 7g for 2 snacks. The diet I was on the first time had too many carbs (which pisses me off b/c I was advised by "the best doctors for GD" in CA.)

It's working!!!! My sugars shot up right away when I got pregnant. I switched to this diet and test my sugars every day. I'm in the normal range every time.

Just wanted to share.

I have had GD with both my pregnancies and would really like more information on the diet that you have been following - I only have a month to go but they are saying what a huge baby I have already - supposed to be 3.8ks at birth - i didn't think that was too big but I'm in skinny france so nevermind. But also I have given up going to my dietician because I just feel like when I tell her what I have been eating she just doesn't believe me and feel that I am being treated like an idiot - so I'd love some more information. I have had the same problem with carbs and have cut down but not completely out.
