Anyone have GD and plan on refusing to be induced? My OB is very intent on inducing me at 39 weeks. It seems like they assume I will go along with the plan. I have other ideas. I have controlled my sugar pretty well and have only gained 11 pounds at 35 weeks. The baby looks good at the fetal stress tests and my fluid is good. I figure if that holds true there is no medically valid reason for an induction other than standard operating procedure. Just wondering if anyone else is or has been in a similar situation... It's frustrating that they just assume I will be induced. Since this is my first I know that will greatly increase my odds of a c-section. Anyway just looking for any thoughts or input on this situation. Thanks!

hi,<br>
i'm not in your situation but i would recommend getting your hands on the book "obstetric myths vs. research realities, a guide to the medical literature."<br><br>
there are many topics covered and one chapter is just for GD.<br><br>
i suggest you look into it yourself so you're not just taking my word for it, but some of the main points are<br><br>
1- most babies of GD mothers will be of normal weight and most high-weight babies will be born to non-GD mothers<br><br>
2- maternal weight correlates with fetal weight.<br><br>
3- the OGTT, used to diagnose GD, does not produce reliable, repeatable values.<br><br>
4- elective inductions and cesareans for suspected macrosomia do not improve outcomes, and they increase cesarean rates.<br><br><br>
they also make a few more points regarding the test showing false positives for a number of reasons and that there is no convincing proof of increase of risk unless you actually showed values indicative of diabetes.<br><br>
so that is a good book and i've decided to not even do the test this time around. all of their points are backed up by cited studies.<br><br>
hope that helps!

I had borderline GD, easily (and perfectly) controlled with diet and exercise. My midwife and her back-up OB were totally comfortable with me going to 42 weeks, with frequent non-stress tests after 41.5 weeks. I left my original CNM practice because they were more interventionist: their policy was to induce non-GD moms at 10 days past EDD, so you can imagine what they had in store for women with GD!

there's a great post over in Birth Professionals right now about the same exact thing. (I'm not sure how to link or I would). I would go check it out.

I don't have the link right now, but it's specifically against ACOG's policy to induce just because of GD, or because of GD and "suspected large baby" even. I love how OB's quote ACOG's policy only when it's convenient to them, though. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/eyesroll.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="roll">

No personal experience, but wanted to send a virtual hug and high five to you - sounds like you've done your research and know what you need! Keep it up - you have won half the battle just knowing that induction will lead to places you don't want to go...<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"><br><br>
Just keep repeating to yourself - and to anybody who tries to bully you, "I do NOT consent..." Then show up in good active labor and birth that baby on your own terms <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">
