A friend of mine just mentioned, that with modern equipment a lot of parents are already told at an 11-12 week ultrasound what gender their baby will be. I will have an u/s next week (11w5d) and I am a bit baffled.

I am just not ready to put a gender to my little sprout. I am fine either way and can imagine both to be wonderful, but it is just so early to "genderize" my little one.

Just trying to clear my thoughts on this. How have you dealt with it in the past, or what are your current thoughts on this?

their outside parts are differentiated enough to tell with a US at that time. well some might be, but they look alot alike at first. i think that the earliest the sex organs on the outside develop is 13 weeks.

That seems early to me. I had an ultrasound with DS around 13 weeks and they told me there was no way they could tell at that point. Maybe they just had a crappy machine!

It's quite common to find out at the 12 week testing ultrasound now. I belive they actually determine by pelvic shape and not by 'the goods'. Not 100 % on all the details as I don't opt for testing.

(sorry for extra spaces, my space bar is sticking today)

I read somewhere that there's a line they look for down there; if it's vertical it's turning into male parts, and if it's horizontal it's turning into female parts (or vice versa). So it's not that they're looking at the parts themselves, but merely some sort of precursor that has already begun differentiating itself.

I have no cite for this, so I have no idea if it's fact or fiction.

DDC crashing from May, but I was told girl at 13.5 weeks at my NT scan. And it was confirmed at my 20 week and a few times since then. I could pretty clearly see what they were pointing out to me. Sooo, if they are willing to tell you, you might find out that early although some places are not comfortable making guesses that early.

Thank you for all your input and information! The link was very informative. I had no idea!

I think, we will tell them, that we don't want to know right now. I am just not ready yet. Sounds a bit immature, but I am sometimes slow

See, I am such a skeptic it would do me no good to have this information early on. No matter how good the technology is, I would just doubt the results until I had another ultrasound later. They could tell me they were 99% sure at 12 weeks and I would not believe them until I saw an obvious penis or lack thereof later. Maybe I just have trust issues. heh.

There is one reason and one reason ONLY (but to me, it's a big, big reason) that I want to know the gender ASAP: the name. My DH and I agonize over names . . .I actually dread it . . .and if we are having girl #4 it will be even harder (though I'd certainly welcome another girl) simply because I would not want her to get a "leftover" name that didn't make the cut the first 3 times.

If they give me a 12 week U/S I won't turn it down! (They might since I am old now-- 35!)

This is me! I had one done a week ago and the tech told us what she thought the sex was and since then I have been obsessing over the accuracy, ect. We are completely happy with either sex, so thats not the issue, I just want the info to be like 98% accurate, so now I just sit and obsess until 20 weeks.
