I have to have D&C done on Thursday. I will be put under GA. I know the rule of 'no food after midnight before surgery'. I was able to comply w/ that when I had the same procedure done in Jan. But my surgery was @ 7AM.

This time I'm scheduled to go in @ 1 PM. How am I supposed to go 13 -15 hours w/o food or liquid? This sucks because my body has not recognized that my pregnancy is over. So I have that 1st trimester insatiable hunger still. And I really don't want to deal w/ a dehydration migraine on top of all the other shit I'm going to have to deal with.

So my question.. If last time I was fine not eating for only 7 hours before the procedure, do you think it would be safe if I got up really early in the morning and had a meal and some water? WWYD, in this situation?

I do plan on calling the same day surgery place and asking. But I'm assuming they're going to give the same stupid vague rule. It just doesn't make sense. Why can't they just give you a freakin' time frame? Do they think I'm an idiot and can't count?

The lady @ my OB's office said I still have to comply because, "If they have a cancellation they'll call you in earlier." Ummm, can't I just say, "Sorry, can't. See you at 1:00."

Sorry if I sound a little pissy. I am. I find that feeling bitter is a lot easier than drowning in misery.

TIA

Shhh...don't tell anyone I am advising this...but yes, use your common sense and don't go that long without food. If you are asked, just *ahem* lie. The point is an empty stomach, so it is silly to advise everyone to stop eating at midnight, it should be X amount of hours. I get this question alot from nursing moms and docs who use the same rules for 3mos old and adults, sigh...

I would say, go light, but I truly think after working so long as a nurse, that going so long without nutrition is one reason why people have such a hard time after surgery.

I agree with Barb. Use commonsense.

My c-section was at 5:30pm. It was crazy trying to tell a pregnant woman not to it.
: So I used commonsense (was able to have jello and broth for part of the fast) and I only took sips of water. Didn't gulp down full glasses.

Also - get some advice about some naturopathic or chinese herbs or vitamins to take after the general. Those things can really mess with your mental and physical health and if you've already experience a terrible loss, you don't need anything else going against you
