gentian violet for thrush? anyone?

Does anyone have experience using gentian violet to treat thrush in an infant?

My concerns are that my experience with various yeastie things has been they are TOUGHT and I may want to just stick with the nystatin suspention I got. On the other hand, I've found natural treatments to work best IN ME, so maybe they'd be best in my babe.

Also, the nystatin seems to be really unsettling his little tummy....I wonder if the gentian violet would do the same?

Any thoughts or input appreciated!

I have systemic yeast so I'm a remedy queen.. garlic, nystatin, tea tree, vinegar, and yes, gentian, are all my good friends. I've used them on DS as well and it worked well. Just be mindful not to use it longer than a week because it can cause little sores in the mouth if used for long periods of time.

Make sure you do not get anything higher than 1% GV
also make sure to sterilze everything or buy new-if you are nursing watch out for your nipples...you could pass it back and forth...

to be honest, I tried gv for a while but just could not get rid of the yeast that was having fun jumping between the three of us... we were all purple off and on for a couple of months there... oh the pain! and dd had a horrible diaper rash. (this was made worse by the daycare that they were in assuming the kids were horribly contagious - the purple is very noticeable!) Finally the only thing that kicked it was diflucan for all of us. I felt awful going for such heavy artillery but it really worked! Mind you I am still washing every load of laundry with vinegar to this day - I'm terrified of it coming back!

Nystatin didn't work - not strong enough I guess. Didn't seem to have any effect at all.

If you do try GV, respect the purple. I still have it on the wall beside the changing table. Get disposable gloves, and nice extra-long q-tip things - I don't know what they're supposed to be for but they had them at the pharmacy. Put vaseline on his lips and further around his mouth, otherwise he'll look pretty ridiculous - if you can confine the purple to inside his mouth it's less shocking to strangers! You just paint it on your nipple and then latch him on, afterwards have a look inside to see whether it's pretty well covered otherwise paint a little directly inside his mouth. My kids didn't seem to mind it, taste-wise or from getting any kind of upset stomach.

Good luck - you can beat the yeast!

I used GV successfully for thrush when my DS was 2 mos old. This was after we had tried Nystatin for a couple of weeks with no effect. The GV got rid of the thrush for good. At that point, I also started taking acidophilus capsules every day and still do this. I also gave my son BabyDophilus.
that nystain stuff never worked for us.
I used the geniton violet, and we only put it on once- and the trush was gone, this was after a month of nystain on me and him, plus I had to throw away all nipples, bottles and soothers and start all over again. But it never came back, I didn't relize that it could be on his bottles, so I guess thats where he kept getting it from. I didn't know about "natural" remides back then.
Oh, I also could Never reuse a bottle even if he didn't finsh it or take much from it. I was so scared it would come back, So I used a new steralized bottle every time ( steralized until he was off bottles
)
I have no idea if you do stearalize or not, but I know some dr's are saying it's not nessasary any more just a good wash, but 10 years ago, we "had to" boil up those nipples
I really hope you can get the yeast to go away, it sucks!!
Good luck
SORRY about ramblin on and on and on...................

Yes, we're sterilizing EVERY STINKIN TIME we wash them. Oh well......I DONT want this to stick around long, so hopefully it will be worth it.

We have noticed that the smell to his breath has gone away with a couple days use of nystatin, but my husband feels very strongly about NOT using it for weeks and weeks.....

GV works great for us. nipples, mouth, diaper rash and yoni all have been treated at one time or another. I am always leery of antibotics, but I think that with thrush you have to try one thing, then another if that one doesn't work, b/c it effects different people in different ways. economical too, a little goes a long way
