yahoogroup:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GCM_Baltimore/

-------------------------------------------------

I had an unpleasant reminder this evening of why I don't usually hang out with Christian parents that I didn't meet specifically through an AP group.

There have got to be other Gentle Christian Parents around Baltimore, non-spanking, not withholding food as punishment ("You can't have dinner unless you _____"), positive discipline users.

Can we start a Gentle Christian Parenting Bible study or book club or something? We could read books like How Would Jesus Raise a Child? and Grace Based Parenting.

Added: So I'm thinking along the lines of:
1) getting GBD (grace based discipline) type moms together for support and fellowship
2) spreading the gentle discipline love to the Christian community. (ideas?)

I'm not from b-more, but I just wanted to say that I think it's a great idea for you to start something like that.

I'm fortionate to have a church playgroup that is relatively AP...but just at church I've run into some crazy moms (to me AP is normal lol because oif how I and all my friends growing up were raised).

I hope you get a lot of interest!

I would be up for that. I want to raise my son with GD, and have a lot to learn (and unlearn).

We go to Bethel Assembly of God on Wilson BLVD - near Food Lion.

There is a lot of child focus there I think Sunday school is at 9am, but there is also a kids church at 10:30. Royal Rangers and Missionettes on Wednesday nights (girls scouts/boy scouts basically).

My younger siblings are all involved with the childrens ministries...Johnny of course just stays with me, A few people have actually commented how great it is I BF and once I was outside the sanctuary BFing and someone told me I should BF inside!

Anyway, this is the website www.bethel-ag.org if you have any questions just ask...everyone is welcome to come or visit. We usually go the 10:30am - but DH sometimes to both. For adults the 9am is "classic" (more conservative music) and the 10:30 is "contemporary" (more upbeat music).

Wow I hope that wasn't overload I always use about a 1000 extra words when I talk! I wish I was in Baltimore so I could join you- I think this is SO needed. I have crunchy friends who believe in GD, and Christian friends, but never do the two intersect! I've met some bf'ers in church but no one I've connected with as far as parenting. I just don't understand why churches and christians in general aren't THE major proponents of AP and GD- it all makes so much sense to me on a Biblical basis.

Anyway, if anyone is closer to the DC area and wants to try and form something, that would be great, too

ps. Great book suggestions. I'll have to look into those. Maybe they would be good ones to send my "To Raise Up a Child" friends for baby gifts!

I just bought Teresa Whitehurst's "Jesus on Parenting" and am loving it. It's taking Christ's words & actions from the New Testament & applying them to parenting. You wouldn't *have* to be Christian - it would be appropriate even if you thought Christ was just a neat guy with some cool ideas. But I'm about 1hr 15 from Bmore and 40 min from Hagerstown. I'm pretty close to Frederick tho. I would drive to Bmore or Hagerstown for a monthly meeting. I would drive to Frederick weekly or bi-weekly. I'm willing to host monthly.

I'm going to set up a yahoogroup for us tonight. From there, I'm going to plan on hosting the first two meetings here and then we can go from there with who wants to host it.

First I'd like to cover grace based discipline. I'm thinking that for the first meeting, we can have everyone bring copies (to share) of a gentle discipline article and we can talk about coming to gentle discipline despite a church culture that doesn't always support it.

I would very much like to do a book group study (maybe every other week?) on Grace-Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel or Jesus on Parenting by Teresa Whitehurst. We could vote on which one.
