A while back I bought some Gerber Birdseye prefolds, I also have some unknown handmedown prefolds that are a lot thicker. I'm trying to get started with cloth and bought a couple covers. With both the pee goes straight through to the cover. It didn't leak, but the cover smells like urine and will need to be washed. Is this normal with prefolds or is it the kind of prefolds I have?

People gave me Gerber prefolds with my first daughter and I tried to use them with bummis covers, but they NEVER worked well. They always leaked. It seemed like they just repelled urine after a few uses.

I think it's worth the investment to get some prefolds from Greenmountaindiapers.com

It's about $20 for a dozen and they're awesome.

Some Gerber prefolds are okay, but the bird's eye prefolds are notoriously bad. If Gerber are your only brand option, then either the diaper service or the premiums are better for diapering than the bird's eye.

Gerbers are great for spit ups! (and dusting the house and washing the car and...) They're pretty much junk for diapering, though. Sorry I second Green Mt Diaper. She has awesome pictures and intro to diapering info, too.

yes, Gerber are great for dusting, and burp rags, and stripping furniture!

I got diapers from Diaperraps, and I love them, they are very absorbent.

I've heard of people adding a few layers of flannel to the middle panel of a gerber prefold. It adds absorbency and can be cute too. I haven't tried it, but if you sew and have some extra fabric laying around, it might be worth a try.

I just retired my gerbers as diapers. I bought unbleached indian perfolds, 2dozen for $60 and I'm in love.

The gerbers stunk, and they would only work for an hour or two and when I changed her she was completely soaked.
