DS likes to pee standing at the toilet. He is tall enough so that we don't need a stool or step for him to stand on, he clears the edge just fine. He is generally dry all day as long as we remember to take him to the potty every 1/2 hour or so.

Thing is, he never tells or indicates that he his about to poop. We have a lot of poopy underpants and so forth because he'll run and hide when he has to poop.

DS is still too small to sit on the regular potty seat. He falls right in. We have a potty ring for him, but I don't think it's comfortable because he generally refuses to sit on it. Our little plastic potty is really too small for him, when he sits on it his knees practically touch his chin and his bottom gets all red from being stuffed in the small hole.

How do I encourage him to sit on/poop in the potty?

Gosh, that's a hard one... my son was using the potty starting at 2, and pretty much done (dry at night) shortly after 2.5 -- he started out sitting for everything, though, and once he got it down pat, THEN he started standing for pee. I dunno how you would work it the opposite way.

Does he come to you all uncomfortable after he's pooped himself, or does he not care much? It took my son a couple days longer for pooping in the potty than peeing -- he pooped in his underwear on those days. The last time he did it, I made a big deal (NOT in a shaming way!) about what we had to do to clean up before we started playing again. How we had to take off his shoes, then pull off his shorts, carefully (!!) pull off his underwear and shake them into the potty, wipe, get all new underwear to put on, etc etc... but if he went in the potty, he'd just have to wipe, pull everything back up, flush, wash and go right back to playing! I was shocked when this actually worked

Edit: Oh I also wanted to say that we had the little potty seat that went on to the big seat, but he didn't like it much. Preferred just sitting on the big potty, even though his entire bottom went into the hole. He just held himself up by his hands. Still does this. It actually puts him in a better position for the job at hand, imho.
