I bought a bunch of regular (4x6x4) UBCPFs to be the bulk of my stash. I bought them from 3 different places, just to see if there would be any difference. But they are all the same and they're all so incredibly PILLY. Uggg! They're like sandpaper with the pills, they're so rough. I've washed them all over a dozen times and I swear they're getting worse. I don't remember the regular UBCPFs I bought over a year ago ever going through a pilly phase like this! Is there anything I can do to get these pills off? TIA!

Keep on washin'.

My UBCPFs took several months of use (and lots of washing and drying) to lose their pills and become soft. I still don't think they're softer than my bleached CPFs, but at least they're not "sand paper."

Yep I agree...mine all went through the pilly phase and came out the other side and have been pill free for months now. Just keep washing and drying

Yep, keep washing. The pills will go away soon but it takes a while (I always dry my CPFs in the dryer, and I wonder if that helps too... helps to beat some of the pills off?)

Also, they DO eventually get even softer than the bleached. I have some UB that are about 2 yrs old and they are sooooooooo incredibly soft. The newer UBCPFs I have DO feel much rougher but even those are softer than my bleached that are about the same age.

I agree - Keep on washing
I would have been disappointed with my unbleached prefolds the first week, had I not been warned by some ladies here that UCPFS are not soft until after MANY washes and drying cycles. Mine are getting softer and softer - it's amazing!!
Just wondering - are your prefolds made by Green Earth? Mine are and they are very good

I had some 4x6x4 diapers (don't know the brand, maybe Green Earth) and they were pilly for a while. My 4x8x4 from Green Mountain diapers never pilled, though, and they stayed thick and soft for a million washes. I'm getting ready to start with them on my next baby!
