Our mattress set is 10 years old and its killing my back. So we did our taxes and are getting some back.
: We decided to bite the bullet and go buy a new set and give our 3 year old our set.

Well we did that this past Saturday and I feel really guilty.
We have been trying so hard to cut expenses/save/pay off debt. I feel awful.
We ended up spending $700 with the set and the matress cover. The set was on sale.
: We can also sleep on it for 30 days and if we don't like it, return it and try a different set.

Spending money is no rush for me.

I agree with Angelbee. It will be money well spent. I promise!

We had an old, uncomfy full size mattress for years and I hated it. Especially while pregnant. We just could never justify the cost. Well, about a year ago after we moved we bought a very comfortable king size and the difference in sleep, back pain, energy etc., is truly amazing. I am kicking myself for not using tax money years ago, or saving up for it because it really does mean DH and I (and any co-sleeping LO's) get a better nights sleep.

Think of it as an investment to your health and thus your future.

As someone currently sleeping out a really bad mattress (to the point I dread going to bed) I would not think of a good mattress as a luxury but rather a necessity. Sadly I don't have the cash to buy a new one but thankfully a recently divorced friend is giving me her old California King Memory Foam since her new partner doesn't want to sleep on it (she bought it before the divorce) and they bought a new one.

Back pain from a bad bed is no joke as I am learning, before my friends offer I was almost at the point of going to rent a center to get a new bed which we all know is a bad idea. $700 sounds like a good deal based off the research I have been doing on beds.

We just did this too...We spent $750 on a new KING size mattress...heaven!
We had 4 people squished into an old, saggy, lumpy, springy queen, and the difference has been amazing!!
I agree...don't look at it as a LUXURY at ALL!!!...it is an investment in your health and happiness..just the same as buying healthy food for yourself, or medication.....

We LOVE our new mattress...

A nice mattress is so worth it. Get over it and have a good night sleep. Our mattress cost about $1000 and we got a bedroom set also. It was an expensive endeavor, but OMG it has made life so much better. Sometimes you have to spend money to make life better, that's just the way it is.

So totally worth it. I unfortunately had to cash in my retirement plan a couple of years ago (another story for another thread), and I ditched my old bed that was giving me back aches, and making me not want to go to sleep at night, and bought an organic latex king size bed. It was insanely expensive, and I still feel a little guilt at the thought of how much I spent on that thing, but it has a 20 year warranty and is absolutely heaven to sleep on. Enjoy your new comfy sleep!

good shoes. good matress. gotta have them. your health depends on it.

and honestly as much as it is killing you to spend money I wouldn't pass an old matress down to my kids either. you can get a new decent twin for $100 or less. besides being bad for your back and causing poor sleep your old matress has about 20 years worth of skin cells, dust mites, bacteria, fungus, drool, dust, degrading foam etc . . . inside of it. good matresses and pillows are an investment in your health.

We replaced out mattress a couple of years ago, and every night when I climb into bed, I tell my dh how much I love it. I haven't regretted it one day since we bought it. A good mattress is worth every penny, and if you have a 30 day window to return it, you can be sure you're getting one you really like.

You got a good deal, btw. Enjoy it.

We did the same thing a few months ago, while I was doing the No-Spend Challenge, no less

Our mattress was 10 years old, I was pregnant, DH was sleeping on the spare bed most of the time and I was sleeping on the couch. We spent just over $1000 on a new mattress, and $250 on 2 new chiropractic pillows. The first night, I stopped snoring (I have always snored!!!!), which was an added bonus helping us both to sleep.

I consider a functional mattress a necessity, like groceries. Good sleep, like nutritious food, is not optional for health.

You spend roughly one-third of your ENTIRE LIFE in bed (assuming you get enough sleep!). It ought to be comfortable and healthy

I spent over a year sleeping on the floor, including most of my last pregnancy. When we had the fundage I sure did buy a wonderful organic latex mattress
: Best spent $$ in my entire house, IMO.

Okay, I feel better.

When you put it into perspective of necessity and not a luxury. Its one of those things you hate to spend money. Like tires!
But you have to. Sigh...

Well my daughter has a queen size bed, not a twin. I don't have the money to go out and get her a queen size mattress set.

We did spend less than $100 on my sons twin bed. What a mistake and a waste of money. The mattress is way to hard.
We are eventually going to have to get him a new set.

please don't feel so guilty! as my husband was taught....you should always spend the money on a quality bed and quality shoes as you spend the vast majority of your life in either one or the other.

i only WISH i could say that we only spent $700 on ours! he lived up to that motto when we dropped about $4000 on our bed a few years ago......king size adjustable tempur-pedic with massage. but it's wonderful!

I had a little bit of buyers remorse with our new mattress last year. We spent more than you did though (but ours will last 30 years give or take - I'm all about the Englander latex ones - my mom has one that's 35yo that's still comfy to sleep on that I grew up on).
But.
We spend how many thousands of dollars on cars and spend how much time in them? And how much time do we spend in bed? So, for us, skimping on a mattress and getting a $200 set from used-furniture Larry down the street just doesn't seem like the best idea. I'm also quite a fan of good shoes as well. Does it hurt to spend $50 on a pair of Merrel (or whatever we got for him last go-round) shoes for my 5.5yo when I know I'll need to go get another, bigger pair in a few months? Sure. But the kid's like 90% energy and is always hopping/running around on those little feet. Feet are hard to fix, as are backs.

I do understand, though we haven't bought a new mattress. It is just hard to spend money (big or small) when you are working so hard on NOT spending much. But you made a good choice, thought through things carefully, and made a wise and needed purchase.

Sweet dreams!

also keep in mind the reasons we live frugally is not to make ourselves suffer. it is so we will be able to provide the things we *need*. there is nothing wrong with buying what you need (in this case a new mattress). this is just the sort of reason you are working so hard to not spend foolishly.
