We are making a brooding box, and have read so many different things about what the "litter" should be. I read a website that said to use dry leaves, one said pine shavings, and another papertowels or bathtowels. Which one is correct? I want to give the babes their best chance!

BTW, we are getting 3 buff orps, 3 astraulorps, 3 easter eggers and 3 silkies.

I don't think there's any right way or wrong way.
The first time we had chicks we used pine bedding and, for the first day or so, covered that with newspaper (oh, what a mess when that gets wet!) Now we just use pine bedding from the get-go.

Congrats on your chicks!

Pine shavings is my bedding of choice. Some say to put paper towels over top for the first few days until they get used to where the food source is so that they do not eat the shavings. I've never personally had this issue with chicks, just ducklings who will, it seems, eat just about anything!

Just stay away from cedar shavings.

I have seen chicks eat shavings occasionally, I wonder if they were stupid chicks? The only thing I wouldn't recomend is cloth - their toes get caught. I once used that catlitter made from newspapers and it worked really well, but it is more expensive. (My cat hated it so we had it leftover.)

I did pine shavings. I put down paper towels at first, cause it made clean up easy. Then once they started shreading it - maybe by a week, I stopped with the towels. I've heard not to do cedar for the fumes, but I accidently used them for a refill and I didn't have any trouble.
